Fall is a great time to start hiking. Depending on where you live in Michigan (I used to live in Grand Rapids), there are a lot of nice trails. Look in your local library or bookstore for trail guides. Some of my favorites in the Lower Peninsula are the trails in the Jordan River Valley up north (east of Charlevoix.) If you live near Lake Michigan, the trail network along the shore near Saugatuck Dunes (south of Holland on route 31) has some great views of the lake.

Another good source for recommended trails would be the folks who work in backpacking equipment stores if there is one near you. There is an REI store just west of Detroit where you can get information, buy gear and even sign up for local hikes. Outdoor groups like the Sierra Club also offer day hikes at all levels of experience.

Your most important gear is a good-fitting and sturdy pair of shoes. In mild weather and on short hikes (less than 3 or 4 miles) you could wear a good pair of running shoes, but ankle-high leather or nylon-leather boots will give you more support and protect your feet, also keep your feet from getting tired and sore. Always wear fairly thick cushioned wool, wool blend or polyester socks (Thorlo, Wigwam and SmartWool are good brands) to prevent blisters and to keep your feet dry. NO cotton or tube socks! And make sure you try on boots wearing those socks. Loose cargo pants (not jeans) are more comfortable for hiking and, in Fall weather, a polartech fleece top and light parka will usually be all you need for warmth. It's a good idea to carry a knit cap, gloves and a cheap plastic rain poncho also. And, of course, your trail map or trail guide. Most MI trails are well-marked but it doesn't hurt to have a compass -- it can be easy to get turned around in Michigan's flat terrain and not be sure which direction you are heading,

You will likely want a small daypack to carry bottled water, snacks, your camera, sunglasses, rainjacket or sweater (depending on the season.) Michigan trails are not very steep, but you might want to consider taking an old ski pole as a walking stick if you are going to try a steeper trail or one where you might cross a creek. Binoculars are handy if you have them and a cotton bandana or two is useful.

Depending on your fitness level, start off easy, maybe on a 3 or 4 mile loop trail. That should take about 2 hours at an easy pace with stops for snacks, photos and admiring the scenery. Gradually increase the length of the trails you attempt and soon you may find that an 8 or 10 mile day hike is a very enjoyable outing.

Hope some of this info helps. Hiking is a great activity, costs nothing (once you have your gear) and is excellent for your health -- happy trails to you!
