what about all of the carbon monoxide released into the air from our cars? I'm sure that contributes to our environmental problems more than a measley cigarette smoker.

I agree, actually. Cars emit much more carbon monoxide than smokers and people wonder why cancer is more prevalent in the cities, while smoking is more prevalent in the rural areas.

I think because sometimes second hand smoke is more dangerous than the person actually smoking the cigarette. A lot of people don't want to feel like they have to stand being around a smoker and inhale everything just because the other person smokes. I personally smoke and have for 6 years, and although I don't think it's healthy and I know it's not good for me, I do know there's plenty more out there that pollutes the air and people's lungs just as much as cigarettes. I agree with you. I've always thought about people sitting at a stoplight, say your windows are down and this car with bad exhaust pulls up next to you, you're getting carbon monoxide from that just as well. I don't know, I agree with you though.

Because unlike driving a car, smoking benefits absolutely no one.

Also, "getting cancer" and "environmental problems" are two completely different things. People get cancer from second hand smoke. Environmental problems cause global warming. I don't really see the link between the two.

I don't smoke, but I have nothign against those who do.

I still hate cigs and second-hand smoke, though, more so than any other pollution. Why? I think because people need transportation to a point of necessity. Not to just get around, but more to their lifeblood (for work purposes, etc.)
Smoking, on the other hand, is not a necessity in my view. You don't need to smoke to survive (haha... you actually shouldn't smoke to survive.) I guess most people would have the same perception. Cars and such contribute for ease of travel. I don't see anything cigs can contribute on. And please don't tell me it's to relieve stress. There are much better, healthier alternatives.

I have nothing against considerate smokers, though. As long as they smoke in appointed areas it's fine.

because smoke from cigarettes doesn't just release CO. It realeases various harmful chemicals. And they're more harmful to people around you because they don't have the filter to help filter some of the crap out.

Cars don't make me smell like a bar when I stand next to them.

because it's one of the leading causes of cancer, and most smokers are people who could care less, and continue to puff it down the lungs of nonsmokers.
