The OT was a forecast to the NT. Jesus had to become man
to die, God as Spirit cannot die. He took on human flesh,
John 1:14, so he could be the perfect sacrifice for all of our
sins. David believed in the coming Messiah/Jesus. He just
didn't know His Name. The animal sacrifice was a type to
come, Jesus is called the Lamb of God. He finished the work.
John 19:30.

It was in the prophecy that Jesus Christ will die as a man by way of crucifying him because the Jews do not have belief on Him .His death is the fullfillment of the prophecy as it was written in the bible. But within the period of 3 days He rose to Heaven with God, the father.
That is the very reason why Jesus was always saying to His deciples that within 3 days He will built His church. The body of Jesus Christ now represent His church which is the Church of God and His sheperds are the believers of the church or Christ. OK?

Forgiveness is not salvation. Salvation is forgiveness accompanied by the "restoration" of our souls back into God's grace.
When Adam was created, he was created perfect, and lived "in the presence" of God. When he sinned, God, being a just God, could not allow that, and thus He "threw" Adam/Eve out of the Garden of Eden. It was at that time, that God promised to provide a "means" of "restoring" mankind back into His presence, and that was through the gift of salvation that Jesus had accomplished by dying and rising again. Okay... here goes the real details....
God said that the wages of sin is DEATH.... that is both a physical AND spiritual death. The ONLY way for Mankind to pay that price is to die... but it is not in mankind's power to die and then rise again to be "reunited" with God. It is not physically nor spiritually possible. That is why we cannot "save ourselves" by means of WORKS... because even if we do the ultimate "work".. to die... we cannot raise ourselves... we don't have that power.
But God, being omniscient, knew that there was ONE WAY that He (God) could satisfy His need for "justice" (the forgiveness of sins) and to restore man's presence with God... and that was through His Son, Jesus. How? Because Jesus is God, Jesus has the power to raise Himself from the dead (both spiritually and physically). He has that capability. And, since Jesus is sinless, He actually did not HAVE to die for HIS sins, since He has none... but He offered Himself as a substitution (just as an animal sacrifice is a substitution). He died IN OUR PLACE.
It's as if you, being a convicted murderer, say, were ready to go to the gas-chamber to be put to death for your crime... and then Jesus came to the prison and said to the warden... "WAIT!!! Do not put this person to death! Please, put ME to death instead, and let this person go."
It is not impossible for God to forgive sins... He has ALREADY FORGIVEN our sins. We just have to "accept" what He has done... like the scenario above, we have to say, "okay, I will let Jesus die in my place, so that I may live."
As for forgiving others before Jesus was born, that is the concept of "dying in the promise" of Jesus' salvation. You see, at the beginning when Adam sinned, God promised right then and there that He would send a Messiah to redeem and restore mankind. Throughout the Biblical history, there were people who believed in the promised Messiah, and when they die, they die "in that promise"... even though they did not know it to be the "man" called Jesus of Nazareth.
When Jesus died and rose again, He did so both physically and spiritually. We have a chance now to be "risen" spiritually by believing in Jesus' salvation. We are still "stuck" with the physical death, since we are physical beings... however, when Jesus comes again, we will then "share" in the physical restoration of ourselves. Thusly, we will be both physically and spiritually "restored" to God.
Gosh... I HOPE this LONG explanation has helped you understand... this is quite a DEEP question you posed, and cuts to the CORE of Christian theology and doctrine.
Have a blessed day.

He fulfilled the Bible prophecy. It seems sad, but He conquered the death. He is alive and well, and He is capable to wake us up too.
