I have 30 dollars to spend. I am making a complicated background for a play i am working on. Wood is to heavy, must be paintable, lightweight, and 8 by 10 feet (or four 4x5 feet pieces... etc.) Corrugated pads was my first idea but that was to expensive, and I only needed 10 pieces and they are sold in bulk only. PLEASE HELP! I dont know what to do.

Kitty's answer is a good one...use sheets of styrofoam and glue thier edges together. Elmers white glue works very well with styrofoam.
We used to make large archery targets by gluing sheets of styrofoam together to get thicknesses up to 12" and also sometime glued the sheets edge to edge to use as backstops for the arrows. you can then cover the styrofoam with a cloth material glued to the surface if you want a more paintable surface.

Contact a local demolition company as they normally throw everything away and they may give you some.

Think about it would they rather pay to have it taken away or give it away saving an expense.
