Your question is still somewhat vague because you never said what type of photography you want to do. Here are just a few to give you an idea and thse are still broke down into specialty sub groups. Portraits, wedding, product, nature, travel, fine art, forensic and journalism. Some of these career fields require a studio with special lighting others do not but require different lenses and other equipment and techniques.
Depending how good you are at shooting and marketing your images will depend on your income. You can starve one year and be feasting the next.
If you are working for somebody then your hourly wage can vary on your career field, the local economy and how good you are.
Hope this helps,
Kevin

a buddy of mine has several different things he does as a photographer, he is also certified in diving so he does underwater shoots for national geographic, as a photographer he also gets a press pass so he gains access to disaster sites or areas that are cut off from the public (when hurricane ike hit we used it to get down to Galveston beach and surfed) he also has a website set up where he sells his pictures for a set price to people who need to use it for some types of publications and the web sites are self operated, once you set them up they generate income as long as you have pictures people want on there (to make money in that you must have thousands of GOOD pictures which means you will have to take 20 for every 1 that is quality enough) he also sets up portfolios of his REALLY good pictures and sells those to magazines where he collects a check for every time it is used and a percentage for every mag sold and/or printed (his best selling picture is actually one of a squirrel eating an acorn, he has had over 130k on that picture over a 5 year span) he has traveled for different magazines and news papers where they not only pick up the bill but pay him for his pictures- figi- Hawaii- Bahamas- Japan- Africa- etc. He has even done some porn pictures and modeling photography, he says the best thing about the whole thing is that he can choose to do so much because GOOD photographers are in high demand, knowing lighting and composition and knowing all about your equipment is key, if you’re good there are more career opportunities than you can imagine.

It is competitive, but once you have the knowledge under your belt you are a valuable commodity and there is good money to be made as well as many extra opportunities for income such as weddings and other events, prom season, etc.
It IS a job, hard work, not always pleasant circumstances, but it sure beats being in some cubicle all day! You get to go places and meet with people and see things you never would have had a chance to otherwise. You get to be with people during some of the most important moments of their lives and share their joy!

You are right. It is very competitive. You may want to get a real job then do photography on the side. As you establish clients and reputation, you can switch over to photography for a living.
