is it weapons martial arts, hand-to-hand comabt, both? Is it based on the learning curve? the environment itself? Or how useful it can be in actual situations? Or is it just a hobby, or something to do to strengthen your mind and soul?

you should choose whatever one you like the most or would enjoy and if you would like to use a martial art weapon or just hand-to-hand combat either way you could look it up on the web to find locations near you

There are lots of questions about this subject BTW!

1. Taking any martial art is better than taking none at all!
2. whats close to you. If what you want isn't being taught close to you, it probably won't work out.
3. what you can afford - usually around 100 bucks a month

4. Weapons - I just don't get this. Why learn how to fight with a sword or num-chuks when you can get arrested for having them in public - kind of a waste of time and not pratical at all.

5. most places allow you to take a free class or two or a week of training at no cost. go see what you like!

Only you can decide what your goals are for martial arts. There is no point lying about it to yourself.

If you want to learn how to fight so that you can kick some **** when you need to then so what? There's nothing wrong with that, just becuase some people practice martial arts more for the spiritual side doesn't mean you have to even care about that part at all.

Remember one thing, all styles were invented to defend yourself from attackers so all styles can be used effectively. There is no such thing as a style that doesn't work, if it teaches you how to block, attack and some stategies then it'll work. It's just up to you to practice and get it working.

It really annoys me that people crap on so much about martial arts not being for fighting... This really is just an excuse, even the monks learnt their skills to protect themselves from bandits.

Weapons are part of any martial art training as well as hand to hand. You advance at your own level and timing. I found it to be useful. I have been attacked and was able to defend myself. It isn't a hobby. It can be a life style or a sport. Choose by determining your strengths. I was upper body weak so I chose Tae Kwon Do because of the use of kicking. If you like grappling, try judo. good luck to you.

Its more important to find a good teacher to study under than to find a particular style of MA to study. Does it make sense to search for a particular style of MAs that may or may not be available in ur area only to find out later the school is a McDojo? Not all teachers are as knowlegable as other. Just check google for a list of MA schools in ur area so u know whats available to u. Research the schools and their teachers before u decide which MA u want to study.

The best way is to visit your local dojos/schools and decide after watching a class, how it's run, what sort of techniques are used, if you think you'll be able to do them. (i.e. If you're a 60 year old guy who can't kick above the knee, I wouldn't start an Olympic Taekwondo class)

Best way: go to the local schools and take up their offer for free class(es).

most schools offer at least 1 free class. so just hop around taking free classes.
I'd reccomend muay thai, brazilian jiujitsu, kyokushin, or whatever...
