don't listen to those guys telling you its bad! running is great! i'm a cross country runner, so this is pretty reliable. if you're looking to build stamina/endurance, i would recommend long runs (5+ miles) once or twice a week. to build acceleration, do intervals-similar to what you were doing. pick a distance like 400 or 800 meters. run that far FAST! then take a 1 or 2 minute break-long enough so that your breathing/pulse returns close to normal but not enough that u are totally relaxed. then do it again-try to keep your time somewhat consistent. repeat anywhere between 3 and 5 times. once a week is enough for intervals. on the other days either relax, go for a short, easy run (2-4 miles) or cross train (bike, swim, rollerblade, even walk). hopefully this helps you become a better soccer player and maybe i can even convert you to a runner!

I can't think of a better way to keep in shape for soccer. It's said that a pro soccer player runs about 6 miles during a match. But as your soccer season gets closer, you'll need to get more specific in your training. Maybe cut down to 2 days of your 5.5 mile workouts, then do more soccer-specific drills on the other days.

Good Luck
