We've tried everything but the drugs. He ate his way out of a steel crate and a kennel. we love him and I am afraid he is going to hurt himself.

He is not a monster dog. He suffers from separation anxiety. It is a fear thing. He is just trying to get to you. Try putting some of your old clothes in the crate with him after you wear them, leaving your scent with him to comfort him. You may have to ask a vet for some sedatives to calm him. Put him in the crate while you are home and leave his view. Return when he whines and let him know he is ok.(but don't let him out of crate) Let him get used to the fact that you will return. Do this over and over and over again, and the length of time before he gets upset will increase. This is not an instant cure, be patient, and above all, do not lose your cool, as this will make him even more upset. Remember, patience and time will give him more control of his fear.

I have heard of dogs doing this, and its a tough one. I agree with a light sedative to help him get through this. It probably is separation anxiety.
Whoever said he was crate trained needs to be in that crate.
I must say this dog is very determined, I don't know if a trainer can help with this or not.

Sounds like he has separation anxiety. Talk to a vet. You may have to give him a mild sedative when your going to be away from him. I had to do it with a dog i had. I hated having to drug him but it was worse when i didn't and came home to his kennel being tore up and the slobber was just gross. So it was easier for both of us to just give him the drugs. I would say that or get a dog sitter to stay with him, may be your only options.

He needs a job! He needs to have some activity that he enjoys doing preferably something that tires him out regularly.

you should take him on a walk before you have to leave him alone. But when you walk him, he's should be at your side, not in front of you. and not sniffing everything, or looking for something.
