The only thing confusing about the term is that there is a similar word, 'emmigrant' which refers to people /leaving/ a distinct locality.

In spite of that relative simplicity, people do get confused. Some think that a person who's distant ancestors came from a place is not an immigrant, even though he is going there after being born and raised elsewhere. Similarly, some labor under the misconception that the native-born descendents of immigrants are, themselves, immigrants. They are not.



Immigrants to America are too diverse a lot to generalize about. For instance, there are both legal and illegal immigrants, and those two divisions, alone, are radically different in the impact they have on society.

Immigrants are good and a needed part of our society and it's growth when they are legally in the county.

If they are not legally here, then they should leave. They don't have to go home, they just have to leave.
