The point of the story is that Jesus was revealing himself as God on earth to the disciples. Peter tested him thinking they saw a ghost, Jesus asked him to come out on the water with and while Peter had his eyes on Christ, he too could walk on the water ( defying Newtonian physics). The minute Peter took his eyes off Christ, he saw the storm and sank. Jesus said "you have little faith" " Why did you doubt me?" The wind stopped after they climbed back in the boat and they said aloud "You are the Son of God"

This tells us a couple of things:
1. If we keep our eyes on Christ we shall overcome the impossible with him.

2. If we look at the storm and think it's bigger than God himself, we will surely sink.

Underlying themes: Christ proclaimed The Son of God, fullfilling prohesy and scripture./ time and time again when our faith can't keep us above water and we are overcome with fear, if we ask for the Lord's help his hand is there.

Well, this is a multi level story. I wonder, when the disciples left, what did Jesus say to those left to hear? Also, it shows that Jesus needed alone time with the Father. Even the well meaning disciples sapped Jesus strength and tried his patience (as we will see later in the story).

Even though the boat had a head start the wind was against it and the disciples have spent a miserable time apart from Jesus. One could say it applies to us. When we leave Jesus we get buffeted by the waves even if we are following his will. When it is time Jesus will come to us and possibly scare the crap out of us.

Next is a funny scene. Jesus is strolling out to the boat in the midst of a "storm." It does not have to be a Gale to be dangerous, but Jesus is at home on the waves. The frazzled tired disciples get the shocker of a life time. Their eyes have witnessed many super natural occurances and not to mention the era they lived they thought they were meeting up with a Ghost or worse. Jesus calls to them and Peter in child like axious bravado wants to step out and take a stroll.

Now many people rag on Peter because he loses sight of Jesus and starts to sink. But, notice Jesus is right there to help him back into the boat and the storm dies down.

But here is what I see no one else has walked on water even a step! Peter enterd the province of God and went to him, but his humanism brought fear and he started to sink. Jesus is already there and you can see either Peter went more than a few steps (as I think) or Jesus was closer and would not let one he called fall. I think a little of both. Peter had to get a little away to get the full scope of what he was really doing. Then he feared but Jesus reached out (for the reasons I said)and walked him in and put him back in the province of man. Then the storm ended to show them that it was all for their benifit to bolster them for the trials to come.

With God the words are important and the deeds are what backs them up with emphasis.

His disciples went ahead in a boat and Jesus dismissed the crowds. After He did this Jesus went up to pray alone. In other words, no one saw Him set out on the water. When His disciples saw Him they were afraid. When they realized it was Jesus, Peter asked if he could walk on water too. Peter tried but didn't have enough faith to go all the way. After everyone was back in the boat, they knew that Jesus was the son of God.

The disciples are on their own, and they are faring badly. Jesus is alone in prayer on the mountain.

The Boat = The Church

When the disciples need help, Jesus appears as Lord over all nature. Peter tries to reach Jesus through walking on the water, but fails, representing all the disciples and all Christians in his enthusiastic love and insufficient faith.

In his fear he addresses Jesus in a prayer (Lord Save ME!) and he receives a criticism of his smallness of his faith. In the end with the adoring confession from the disciples that Jesus is the Son of God.

Mat 14:22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to gobefore him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
Mat 14:23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
Mat 14:24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
Mat 14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
Mat 14:26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
Mat 14:27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
Mat 14:28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
Mat 14:29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
Mat 14:30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
Mat 14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
Mat 14:32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
Mat 14:33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshiped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God

Peter has doubt about the power of Jesus Christ as God so he is afraid that he maybe drown to the sea but Jesus saved him and told him that he has little faith to Him but when the wind cease, they worship Jesus and said, it is true that you are the Son of God.

Jesus taught the disciples to have faith.
Through faith in Jesus Peter walked on the water but when Peter stopped believing in Jesus and began looking at the circumstances of this world he lost his faith and sank.
The verse shows that all things are possible with God so long as man keeps his faith in God not in the world.
There is a greater truth than that which you can see with your physical eyes.

This talks about choice...

If water is knowledge, and the boat is the small part of your conscience.

Mountain represents something that you can climb yourself (hardships that you have gone through). like when they say "mountains and valleys". = (turmoils)

What Jesus wanted to do was find out for himself, through prayer, by what he has gone through.

Imagine going to a party and needing a ride, and you sense some sort of danger.. you think to yourself first... on what would be the right decision for yourself...and then you wanted to hitch a ride with the ones that gave you the choice to ride with them.. but then it was too late because they were already gone.

The disiples were in a boat and it was stormy. Jesus had gone to pray. He came unto them walking on the water. They were afraid cause he wasnt close enough for them to recognise him. He said fear not it is I. Peter said if it is you Lord let me come to you. so he allowed Peter to walk on the water too but Peter heard the wind and he sank into the water. Jesus fussed at him cause he didnt believe.

nobody was praying here maybe you gave us the wrong scripture you wanted an explaination for

This was simply a character and 'faith' test for the Apostle Peter. When taking your eyes off of Jesus in an hour of need one can lose what they need most.

Jesus was demonstrating his divine nature and that by faith in him you can over come many things. If we doubt, we alienate ourselves from the strength that is available through Christ. Miracles were proof of Jesus being God.
