Not much has changed since Christ's day. Jesus himself was a bit dissapointed with the religious system and the people in it. His confrontations with the pharasies (spelling?) are all over the bible.

Absolutely religion which is manmade, has messed up people's connections to the Divine, which is independent of manmade belief systems and rituals. Christ came as an example of behavior to follow, in addition to other great masters. As you have already pointed out, not a massive number of Christians engage in Christlike behavior.

The problem is in promoting a human teacher to God, they make an impossible bridge between themselves and the potential to be like him (not God but LIKE him) Hence the need for a savior and hypcritical behavior, which is excused automatically by this process.

That may be the way your friend feels, but its not why I am an atheist. I just don't believe in the supernatural. I see this as an all natural world, no outside influence.

Nah. Atheist means that you don't believe in any deity. That means God, Allah, Buddah, Zeus, or anything else.

I know Christians who don't like organized religion because of the corruption and showmanship that is rampant in much of it.

In my opinion, I think Jesus was a cool guy. A commie, a liberal. His fan club....not so great.

The reason I'm atheist is that believing in what has no evidence whatsoever is ridiculous.

Whoever said that wasn't an atheist. The problem is there isn't a god.

By your "atheist friends" do you mean that more than one person has made this statement?
