Donkeys can speak for themselves. Balaam is just along for the ride.

i think it would be just like the singing warner brothers frog. balaam would be running around trying to make a buck, and the donkey would only say eee-ow in public. then when they got home, the donkey would nag him about not spending enough time at home. i think the donkey is what the templars found under the temple in jerusalem, it led them to their demise, and now it's under rosslyn chapel waiting for the next poor schmo.

The donkey was only given permission/ability to speak those 3 times, under the necessity, and tradition says that G-d prepared for that eventuality before creation was complete. Any further encounters would not enduce the miracle.
