The church (Bible definition) is made of people that have accepted Jesus as their Savior and not buildings or denominations. That being the case, the church is supposed to be growing more and more like Jesus. The first thing is to love. Other characteristics would be to be forgiving, to not criticize or judge or condemn, to be patient and kind and merciful.
The message is Love. Out of Love, God sent His Son into the world to be the perfect Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world. Out of Love, Jesus went to the cross to take the punishment for sin on Himself, though He never sinned, in order to reconcile man to God and restore this broken relationship. Out of Love, Jesus took man's full punishment on Himself and went to hell. Out of Love, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day and completed the work of salvation for every man. Out of Love, Jesus gives man free choice and will never FORCE anyone to believe in Him.
I'm a Christian, by the way.

A church is supposed to be a place where you can get in touch with God.
You should have a place within the church boundaries that you can meet others, yet fellowship with those alike and non-alike.
Every church has a "holy place". Whatever book you follow to read (Bible , Torah, etc) this "holy place" should allow you to understand WHO God is and WHO you are.
My church is about 5'8" 140 lbs, and I study many different religions that believe that God is Thee Creator.
I accept those who are willing to learn and teach at the same time.
For those who don't understand this, "church" is a place for refuge, you should be accepted into any church that does not pass judgement on you.
Ocean's (that's me) Law #1 = concept, principal and morale.
Put this in likeness to how you are, and how to receive God. Now build your church that includes thee Creator!..
I have more teachings on faith if you want to see.. I am a choreographer and dancer by trade..

A serious question deserves a serious answer.
I don't really know, but I will try to answer. First of all, I am a Christian. I believe that the body of Christ should be in unity and not divided over denominations or types of churches. A church may have a particular focus or theme in their teachings, like family, missionary outreach, healing, etc, but the churches should not be divided because of their differences, but rather celebrate them. After all, we are all members of Christ's body. Though we have different functions, we need one another to grow up and mature.
I personally attend a church where the gospel of grace of Christ is preached strongly. It's the same gospel which Paul preached, in which the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation (meaning deliverance, healing, wholeness and soundness), as stated in Romans 1:16-17. Although the gospel may be misunderstood by some, as Paul himself was misunderstood when he preached grace, it is the power of God to minister healing to those who are sick, set free those who are bound by destructive habits, as well as supernaturally provide for those who are facing financial lack. After all, Jesus came to earth to preach good news to the poor, heal and deliver those who are oppressed.
Finally, a church should follow the pattern of the early church, where four things were practised: doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread (the Lord's supper), and prayers. (Acts 2:42)
Just to add: this is my church's website, in case you are interested. :)

Church is meant to be within our own tabernacles, not an outward building. The message is one of brotherly love and love of God above all else. Recognition of the kingdom within us and the attainment of spiritual fruits, which serves to eternalize our personality on the other side. It is the spiritual gains that are made in this life, which provides the stepping stones for a grand spiritual career after death. Salvation is free for all who desire it.

One , Holy, Apostolic and Catholic. The message should be that all humanity may have salvation through faith in Christ because of His cleansing, redemptive blood shed on Calvary. The Church is the "bulwark and ground of the truth", The Catholic Church is everything that Christ created the Church to be.
In Christ

I am a Christian and can only speak of the Christian church. It should be scripturally based, unafraid to tell the truth, and unafraid to evangelize. It should seek to model the kinds of lives we as Christians are called to lead, with honesty and reverence. And it should reach out into its community and seek to do good wherever it can for others, with an emphasis on missions, whether local or abroad. It should not be self-serving, for Christ Himself came not to be served, but to serve others. I am blessed to have found just such a church: http://sevenhillschurch.tv/.

Acts 2:42:
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
That's pretty much it.
