Vanilla is used as a flavor or as a compliment to other ingredients. You can use different extracts, or flavors in place of vanilla. Almond is nice, but use less. The zest from an orange or lemon is good with any fruit ice creams or even chocolate. Get creative.

Sure. Try chocolate or coffee flavor. Plain "vanilla" ice cream will taste like cold milk w/o vanilla extract!

Sure you can...if you are out of Vanilla, it will still taste good....just different...
My Mama would use chocolate powder and instant coffee to flavor hers,,,,or syrup like maple or blackberry or chocolate......or peanut butter.....you can always cover it with a sauce if you don't like it....blend some fruit and sugar in a blender and pour over your ice cream....

Yes, but it will taste bland unless you have a vanilla bean in which case you just cut it lengthwise and scrape out the tiny "beans" and add then to your ice cream mixture.
