Caffeine is one of several compounds that are naturally occurring stimulants in certain foods and beverages. Caffeine is found naturally and as an additive in coffee, tea, cola, certain soft drinks, and some pain relieving and migraine abortive medications.

Migraine pain is caused by vasodilation in the cranial blood vessels (expansion of the blood vessels), while headache pain is caused by vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels).

Caffeine is a mild vasoconstrictor and stimulant and has been shown to be useful in pain and anti-migraine medications. Because of a paradoxical phenomenon known as caffeine rebound, headache patients should refrain from excessive daily use. Most headache sufferers can consume up to 200 mg. per day. However, some patients with frequent headaches should avoid its daily use completely.

A brewed cup of coffee (6oz.) contains about 60-100 mg. of caffeine. Soft drink beverages contain about 30-60 mg. per 8 oz. servings.

You are not neccessarrily addicted as has been suggested by others above. This is not the issue. However, your body has habituated to the daily intake of the vasoconstrictor (caffeine). Since you do not have this in your system your body responds with vasodilation in the cranial blood vessels, and thus migrainous type headache pain.

If you want to continue your intake of caffeine, make sure it stays constant, but otherwise, taper off, and then stay with decaf.

Good Luck!

By the way, take Excedrin Migraine for the headache two tablets will give you 130 mg of caffeine.

You are so addicted to caffeine!! Drink a cup of coffee and that headache will go away.

If you want to quit caffeine, do it gradually. Stay away from Coke and other sodas that have caffeine. Also Excedrin and some other pain relievers have caffeine.

Good luck to you. There's nothing wrong with a couple cups of coffee a day, unless you have a reason for wanting to quit. :)

You're most likely addicted. I would slowly stop on the coffee consumption if you want to quit. It would be very painful to just stop.

Caffeine withdrawal. You get addicted to the caffeine and when you don't give your body the caffeine, you go into withdrawal.
