It's somthing that ladies in America gave up
when skirts got tighter and shorter.

First of all, NO ONE approaches the Queen -- she approaches you. If you approach her, you'll find several exquisitely polite policemen suddenly standing in your way. If she approaches you, you smile, and, if you are a British citizen, a small curtsy is appropriate if you are a woman, or a slight bow of the head if you are a man. Equally appropriate is a gentle handshake, but only if the Queen offers her hand. And you only speak if spoken to -- she's the Queen, she gets to direct the conversation and choose to whom she wishes to speak.
And traditionally, one never turns their back on the Queen, to the extent of walking backwards out of a room if necessary. And yes, LOTS of people still know how to curtsy -- we learned in ballet class when we were 7!

Ladies and girls in America do not curtsy, nor do they bow when they approach the Queen of England, as She is not our sovereign.
American ladies and girls would address the queen as "Your Majesty" or "Ma'am." Then wait for the queen to offer her hand to shake, rather than reaching for hers. She should be treated with the respect and reverence reserved for all visiting foreign dignitaries with whom the US has a friendly relationship.
As for British ladies or girls, the same as above with the added curtsy.
