On the issue of whether or not there is a God, primarily. Personally, I think Alan Keyes or even the pope would give him a run for his money.

I mean pretty much any historical pope up to and including Benedict, by the way.

Hans Kung

I'd pick Hans Kung to debate anyone on any topic in theology. He actually talks, believes in dialogue, superb education, great writer, professor. Willing to cop to the bad, endorse the good and call BS when BS needs to be called.

number 2 pick probably Charles Curran or John Jenkins.(as mentioned by the person below me)

Hitchens is a terrible debater. He offers up plenty of lines like "theists always do this" and "religion never does that" and never offers any proof or specifics about anything.

He's also got credibility issues. He claimed that Mother Teresa did not believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist -- a key Catholic doctrine. But it's total bunk.

Hitchens debated Dinesh D'Souza in New York a few weeks ago, and D'Souza kicked the crap out of him. (Not literally, of course.)

I'm not a Theist, but admittedly one of the most intelligent and well-spoken advocates for the Christian religion is Rev. John Jenkins, President at Notre Dame.

But I wouldn't pick Hitchens for the debate anyway. His debate skills (for any subject) are questionable.

I vote for the author of 'The Cloud of Unknowing.' I don't even think he would have to debate Christopher Hitchens. All he'd have to do is just get acquainted with Hitchens and _be._ His faith would shine through in everything he did. His actions and his wisdom would be his argument.
