I know Canons are supposed to be good, but they are way out of my price range.

What would be the next best thing, for cheaper?

Take a look at Casio cameras. They offer decent image quality and they are usually pretty affordable.

The Canon cameras are excellent and I use the Canon 5D series in my business, but they are expensive. I keep one of the Kodak easy share cameras in the glove compartment of my car and if you use it within the functional limitations of the camera, it takes excellent pictures in a low budget camera series.
Suggestion... do not buy anything which does not have a peep site as well as the common LCD viewing screen. In bright sun lite (which will be the condition you take most general pictures in) you will not be able to see what your are getting on LCD screen image so a peep site is necessary.

The way I see it, do check out Canon cameras. I can't believe that they are out of your price range, because it seems they're in every price range, unless you're spending less than $125- Website dpreview.com has reviews of many cameras and prices.
