Oh I am so disappointed in reading these answers. I donated 12 inches of hair 3 years ago to Locks of Love, and now to find out that the organization probably sold my hair (if it didn't just throw it away) totally makes me mad. I am growing my hair out again, but I may sell it myself and take that money to donate to St. Jude or the American Cancer Society. At least then I'd know the money went to the right place.

It is a great gesture on your part to help a cancer patient with your hair. But are you sure the hair you donate goes to a Cancer patient free of cost ? No - it will not go. and Most of the companies like (Locks and Love, etc) collect hair for making wigs and selling them for profit. So do not donate.

In India many women have hair of 4 to 5 feet long and they offer their hair at some temples like Tirupati and daily several tons of hair is collected and exported by Govt. of India. They even export such hair offered in temples free of cost to persons making wigs for Cancer Patients. -

Here's the story on donating your hair.

It needs to be a minimum of 10 inches long (after it is cut) for them to be able to use it. Also, it has to be not bleached, because they use hair from several different ppl to make one wig, and they have to dye it all to match, and bleached hair does not hold color the same.
Do your research first, because I found out Locks of Love does not give the hairpieces away for free, they charge the families a discounted price for them, and they work more with kids with alopecia than to cancer kids. Also, they get more hair than they can use, and then sell the rest to pay for administrative fees. Donating your hair does not mean that it will automatically be given to a kid with cancer.

If you want to give your hair for cancer patients than make sure that the organization is for cancer patients.

Locks of Love gives wigs for healthy children with Alopecia Areata which is not cancer related at all. Only 3 percent of children with cancer will get a wig from Locks of Love . . most of the time it isn't even real donated hair . .it is fake hair. So, you are wasting your hair sending it to them if you want it for a cancer patient.

The following organizations help cancer patients who have lost hair from chemotherapy treatment.

Pantene Beautiful Lengths = (for adult cancer patients)Partnered with the American Cancer Society to provide wigs to assist cancer patients suffering hair loss. Includes information about the program and how to become involved.

go to the locks of love website, they have a directory of salons that donate and even give discounts to those who donate. It has to be 8 inches at least (which would be typically donated to a boy) so it looks like you're going to have to wait, also in some cases they can not use hair that has been bleached or dyed using harsh chemicals. maybe just get a trim for now?

Go to the Pantene web site. Pantene is currently running a program to donate hair. It was on Oprah a couple of weeks ago.

Yes if your hair is long enough. I think it has to be at least 6 inches but it may be more. You can check out Locks of Love for more specific guidlines. Good luck, and that would be an incredibly kind gesture.

Please be aware that if you donate your hair to Locks of Love, they do SELL their wigs to cancer patients.. the common misconception is that they are given to the cancer patients for free, and this is not true.
