My husband and I are looking for a way that we can safely help others that are not as fortunate. We already donate a lot, but we want to do something more hands on. I have thought about making meals and giving them out to the homeless, but it doesn't seem like enough. Are soup kitchens a good idea? Any ideas? What would make a difference. Also looking to do something for Christmas....

I dont have any ideas for thanksgiving, But i do for Christmas. I just got out of the Marine Corps, and my dad is a Navy man. So for as long as i can remember i have been in the warehouse distributing toys for the MARINE CORPS TOYS FOR TOTS program. There are several areas you can help with like picking up toys, distributing toys, Working in the warehouse sorting toys n you get to meet alot of great Marines and help out your local community.

If you live in a neighborhood with a lot of elderly you might check in with them and see if they need some help. Local churches will need help passing out meals and soup kitchens for the less fortunate are always away to give back and to give someone a smile.

The best way to find out who is most in need of volunteer help this Thanksgiving is to go to www.usafreedomcorps.gov and type in your zip code and area of interest. You'll get all the volunteer opportunities in your community.
