I had to put a cat to sleep and had another one die in my arms from a heart defect. I cried like a little girl both times and was a grown man both times.

Best thing you can do is simple. Get another cat. Get a kitten they are great. It'll help trust me.

I'm so sorry that you had to lose your cat. Sometimes, what's best for the animal isn't what we want. I've had to put quite a few cats (and dogs) down, and believe me.....it never gets easy! Sometimes, an animal will be so sick that they almost "tell" you that they're ready to "go", but when they get to the vet's, they "perk up" and look around like they've changed their minds! I think it's their way of making sure that everything is the way it should be, and just want to "have a last look". Don't be ashamed to cry / grieve for your "baby". It's normal, and some people take longer than others to "get over" it. I, personally, don't think you ever "get over" it, you just "keep on truckin", and gradually the pain lessens. It never completely goes away.....at least not for me. You didn't say how long he was with you (just that you got him when you were eight), but however long, it never seems like it's long enough. If he was in pain, and it sounds like he had a lot of problems, I'm sure he's in a "better" (for him) place, now, and froliking around with all of the animals he knew "on this side". Good luck.......maybe after a grieving period, your parents will let you have another pet. There are always some in the humane societies that need homes, so that they are "put down". I'll be thinking of you.................

Of course you are going to feel guilty. It is only natural when you have to have a well loved pet put to sleep. It sounds like he was very sick and the surgery would only have a 50% chance of working. Although it was forced, you took the best option. He was probably in a lot of pain and it wouldn't be fair for you to keep him alive. As you seemingly looked after your cat so well, perhaps in time, your parents will let you have another. Get insurance (Tesco does it cheap). Hopefully you won't have to go through the same problem again. Try and be happy that he isn't in pain anymore.

I still grieve over animals I lost some 20 years ago. It hurts and never goes away completely. HOWEVER, PLEASE get a book called "Cold Noses At the Pearly Gates". (There is a sequel to it, but I didn't care for that. Get the first one). It is so comforting concerning our pets having a home in heaven. I can't stress how comforting this book has been for me. Also Jack Van Impe has a good DVD on ANIMALS IN HEAVEN.

But I like the book "Cold Noses At the Pearly Gates" the best.
By the way, I too have held my animals when they were put to sleep. It is so painful that words can't express. The last time I had to do it was on Feb 22, 2006 for my wonderful little girl, Ted E. Bear. What deeply hurts me is that she did not die after the injection. She was asleep but still alive and breathing. She had to have a second injection. Talk about guilt. See her photo here if you are interested:

Anyway, your baby (and mine) are so fortunate to have someone who would hold them when they leave this world. And someone who cares enough to hurt. So many animals are unwanted, and unloved. Your baby, was loved and would tell you thanks if he could. The above web site also has a poem called Rainbow Bridge. Please read that too.
God bless you!

I had to re-read your quesiton a couple of times to get the meaning of the words. I've had cats my entire life and it never gets any easier. For me, the best thing was to adopt another cat from the local shelter. This saves a cat from being killed and most shelters will give you a certificate for a spay/neuter as well as a first check-up at no charge to you.

Never forget your cat, s/he will always have a special place in your heart, but to heal and move on, another one would be my solution.

I'm really sorry to hear of your loss i do no what your feeling, i had to have one of mine put to sleep, i cried for days. I still have a few tears some times when i think about her, but i also have some happy memories which make me smile. Some times as sad as it makes us, it is kinder to put an animal to sleep rather than let them suffer, the pain of losing your kitty will lesson as time passes, have you thought about getting another cat, there are a lot of cats out there needing good homes and lots of love, which sound like you have lots to give.

I had a mother cat, she had 7 babys the low life next door put her in the dog pound. the dog pound people said you have to take it to the doctor for shoots and spading.$140. I said OK. The city dog & cat buchers asked how did the cat get out side? I said " I let it out " she like the freedom to come and go - the city cat buchers said you can't let the cat out. They wouldn't give her back!-- I held her it was very very sad.

Sometimes you have to just let it go. You loved that cat and the only thing that you could do was put him down. Maybe your cat was tired of suffering. I know it hurts he wanted to be at home but he was suffering and his quality of life wasn't good. I say that you just need to pray and allow yourself to grieve honey that is all that you can do.

I've lost a few cats and it's not so easy. The thing to remember is that having a cat is a big responsibility and if you can't afford it don't do it.
