A fundamentalist acquaintance once told me that Jesus not only was a great psychologist, but He invented the whole field of psychology. This brings me to the healing aspects of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or more commonly known as confession.

It is a given that after telling another person about his or her worries, problems and failures, one generally feels better. How much more is the healing when we are forgiven our sins!

Jesus appeared to the disciples in the Upper Room after His resurrection, telling them to not be afraid, and He gave them the power to forgive and retain sins. It is the second part, the retention of sins, that I find all-telling. Clearly, all christians are to forgive one another and be merciful. But, the retention of sins goes beyond a general instruction to all christians. The authority to retain sins was given exclusively to the Apostles. If they had the authority to retain sins, it logically follows they had the authority to forgive sins.

NO!! ADAM WAS THE FIRST PSYCHOLOGIST!!

Having to live with Eve was something Christ was never committed to! The first man living with the first woman, now that required lots of psychology. And judging by the fact that we're all here, it must have worked just fine. Because Adam didn't kill Eve, like Cain killed Abel. Tell your fundamentalist friend that! There would have been no human race for Christ to have come to, were it not for the success of Adam in managing that initial relationship and all the intricacies and complexities it ensued. No! Adam was the world's first psychologist.

No, his cousin, John the Baptiser was.

John the Baptist and Jesus Christ had a family business: Non-profit religion.

John the Baptist encouraged followers to repent and be baptised.

John the Baptist was first and John the Baptist was a radical since he invented water baptism which was not the way Judaism allowed persons to join. Judaism required circumcision. Even Jesus Christ was circumcised.

So John the Baptiser was the world's first psychologist.

Today, most psychologists care nothing about religions so to say Jesus Christ was the first psychologist is saying that Jesus Christ was the first atheist. There are gay and lesbian psychologists today in the USA in good standing with the APA.

Your analysis of the described circumstance is in itself a psychological judgment of conclusion. The textual criticism is merited however it is exclusive of the Holy Spirit implications. Psychology would only be knowledge orientated as it pertains to man if man was intelligent enough to receive it.

Nope, there is plenty of history before the time of Jesus Christ, thus a high likelihood many psychologists came before him.

Easy examples: Plato, Aristotle

Psychology is the scientific study of the behaviour of individuals and their mental processes. Listening to someone does not make one a psychologist.
