I don't want a gun in the house, and I have racked my brain trying to think of what I could get to make me feel more safe when he is gone. I don't want anything that our son could find and hurt himself with. I need suggestions!!! A big dog maybe? but what breed? I have a miniature dachshund so it would have to get along with her. HELP!!!

My dachshund doesn't ever bark and if someone came in the house she would just lick them to death. I would not just simply get a dog for protection and treat it poorly. I love dogs and we have been considering another small dog but now I am thinking a bigger one might be a better choice.
We rent our house currently so I don't want to sink hundreds of dollars into an alarm system or cameras.

A timer for the lights to come on and off at various stages throughout the night for short intervals.

An outdoor automated motion-sensored light - preferably one which emits the sound of a dog barking ferociously
when someone approaches the house. That would be instead of a real live dog (unless you absolutely want one!).

Just prep your son in advance and show him how the 'barking' works.

Keep a bottle of perfume close by to spray in the eyes of (and temporarily impair the vision of) any intruders.

Good luck!

Please don't get another dog simply to make you feel safe -- you won't be and it will be a false sense of security. Get an alarm system and good locks. The dog you have now will likely make noise if someone strange is prowling around. You can get a gun with a lock on it to protect your son as well as provide protection for you IF you go to classes regarding their safe and proper use. You could likely do better going to a class on gun safety/useage than attempting to get another dog and training it properly. Call friends or family to stay with you - take self-defense courses - keep a bat handy - anything but getting a dog won't do it. If a bad guy is going to be detered by a dog, then you have one -- otherwise you would need a well trained one and given most people really aren't capable of properly handling and continuing training (that is needed) of protection dogs, you would likely have more to fear from getting a 'big dog' than a gun. No 'breed' will make any difference -- people suggesting that are inane and lacking in general knowledge regarding dogs and their capabilities in an unknown sort of relationship -- they don't know what you are like, what your situation is like or what experience you have with dogs. If you are that afraid, discuss it with you husband as his family and their wellbeing should be important to him...

A large dog would make you feel safer, but you would have to get it the proper training. Also guard dogs aren't good with lots of company like if you have a party (becase they will be very protective of you) . You could also get an at&t alarm system. The are the best brand.

If you want a really great guard dog, go for the german shepherd which is very well known to be a police dog.
If you prefer a trained dog, you can buy one from the retired dogs from the police station.
In fact, this breed of dog is not only tough but also soft with kids. So, have no worries about your child.

Yeah, a dog is a good idea. Do some research, call some breeders of miniature dachshunds and ask them what large dog breeds are good company. for an MD

Get an alarm on your house. Take self-defense classes in martial arts. They should teach you how to use almost anything (or nothing but your hands and feet) to defend yourself.

Don't get a big dog for protection reasons only, especially if you don't want your son hurt. You have a dog that probably barks - that should be reasonable security. Get locks and and an alarm system and skip the protection dog.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tr.im/MXChN

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I would definitely get an alarm system for the home. You should also keep a baseball bat close by, in case you hear any strange noises. I don't know anything about pets, because I have never had one. But some of my friends have rottweilers or pits.

Small dogs are good for alerting you to anything with their loud yappy voices.
a large dog would be a deterrent, i woudl get a mix breed as they are more easy going & also live longer than a purebred & have less health issues, too.
My daughter sets out an old pair of cowboy boots on the front steps when her husband has to go out of town for business.
there is also a little magnetic device you attach to door & door frame. when the door is shut you set it on & if the door is opened, the magnetic beam is broken & a loud car alarm siren blares,
Stay safe !!

We have a big Golden Retriever. She has a very loud, deep bark and we've taught her to always bark when someone is outside. She's super-friendly though and wouldn't hurt a fly. My husband always says the best thing about her bark is that from the outside, she sounds like a big mean dog, but what people outside don't realize is that she's only barking in anticipation of them coming into the house and playing with her!
