My pup is half maltese and he is wonderful. The maltese personality is great.

Wow....what a difference in the choices you are pondering! The two dogs you mentioned are so different, even the size. But if you decided on a small dog, I'll tell ya, I have a maltese and I love him. He was trained very fast, he loves all people and other animals (even our cat). Best dog I ever owned!!! Go for it!!!!

malteses are great and you can take them everwhere... but the only draw back is, if you care about looks you should know that any white dog's fur will get a bit brown around their eyes from tears, my dog licks her paw (nervous habit?) and the same thing happens to them

st bernard: cute and affectionate but YOU WILL BE COVERED IN SLOBBER AND DOG HAIR CONSTANTLY!!!!!!

EDIT: don't listen to people about grooming, i have three little fluffy dogs like a maltise and we have NEVER sent them to the groomer, buy a brush and clippers and you're good to go, just brush them every so often and if they get any mats just cut them out.

too big of a span in breeds there with not enough info to answer it for you...youre living arrangements/conditions...your willingness to spent time grooming (for both), how big of a pooper scooper you have.. lol too many factors to try and tell you what you should get here.

and oh yes..the slobber factor...ugh st bernards drool HORRIBLY!! great dogs...bad droolers.
i personally have a shih tzu but i dont really have the room for a dog like a st bernard. plus they shed bad

those are VASTLY different breeds. no one can tell you what dog would fit your lifestyle w/out knowing what type of lifestyle you lead.

are you energetic, athletic, slow and easy going, busy busy busy, etc.? do you have small kids or older kids or no kids. can you afford to groom a dog 3 times a month, or just a bath once a month? do you have a problem w/drool? do you have a large yard and a house, or a small patio and an apartment?
research the breeds and see for yourself which would fit best in your home.

Maltese. This dog will not consume your life as much as a SB. Go to a shelter....

Personally I think St. Bernards are really nice. Keep in mind sheding though. They have very long fur, and most tend to slobber, but they do look really nice.

That's an awfully big difference. Depends on what you are getting the dog for (purpose). The choice is all yours.
