You know when of the reasons that the aftermath of Katrina was so bad was because the Louisana National Guard was in Iraq and couldn't get back to do their previously normal mission. Normally, the Guardn would have provided security, etc after a natural disaster but their mission has been expanded. I have deployed with Guard so far but no Coast Guard, at least not yet.

the National guard is at war right now...and so is the Coast Guard. I had a friend pull duty with the Port Security Unit in Seattle. When Iraq kicked up, he was sent to the Middle East with his unit to conduct security operations. So, both are engaged in the currect conflict in Iraq, at the moment.

They both have. National Guard can be called up at any time--in fact, they often are. The Coast Guard is mostly for domestic issues, including security.

At the moment there's has been and is a whole bunch of Nat. Guardsmen/women sent to Iraq and I expect the coast guard has cranked up it's operations because of tarriest threat.
