Architectural engineering is, a minimum of at my college, very equivalent to structural engineering. And at the same time as all structural engineers are civil engineers, no longer all civil engineers are structural engineers. Civil engineering is a huge spectrum which also incorporates geotechnical, water, and site visitors engineering.

The largest difference is that architects are NOT engineers. Architects design how a building is to function and appear. For example, he may lay out the floor plan, where the walls are, how many stories the building is to be, etc. all based on what the building owner desires. He also can chose exterior wall panels, floor systems, roof systems, etc. But all his choices must be structurally adequate and that is where he needs the services of structural engineers.

He also designs and details the foundations and foundation systems. He designs and details the shear walls, bearing walls, and the lateral force resisting system. The architect cannot do any of these things.
