Yes, he was never involved in Hitler's mass murders. He was a soldier fighting for Germany. In fact he and some others tried to kill Hitler. If the German General's had been able to control their armed forces, the war in Europe would have lasted much longer than it did. Our best ally in the war was Hitler because he made so many mistakes. Rommel was a victim of the times.

Field Marshall Rommel was one of the best commanders of World War ll. His tactics and strategies are still taught in military schools around the world. He was never a Nazi, just a German General and a damn good one at that. When Hitler decided to kill him, he had to make it look like Rommel succumbed to the wounds he suffered at the Invasion of Normandy. If Hitler had not done that, there would have been an uprising against Hitler that would have toppled the Nazi Government. Hitler even had to give him the largest state funeral ever done in Germany. Hitler hated the large popularity that Rommel received because it took away from good old Adolf.

Erwin Rommel is and has always been a respected commander. Especially by his contemporaries for his innovative use of armor and combined arms theories. George Patton based a lot of his maneuver on Rommel's book.

I met his eldest son back in the late 70's in Germany. He was always surprised at the words of praise American leaders had for his father.

Few people recognize him as a Nazi. They see him as a great German Army commander, that's all.

field Marshal Rommel became a good guy in that he became a specialist soldier and he acted like an officer and a gentleman. He became a extraordinarily embellished officer for the duration of worldwide conflict a million and our very own field Marshal 1st viscount montgomery of alamein (worldwide conflict 2) comments approximately him have been consistently stunning, even however he became scuffling with against him in Africa. the undeniable fact that he became an officer and gentleman could have annoyed the Nazis as he did not have faith in each and every thing that they did. He became in touch interior the plot to kill Hitler, the plot failed, Rommel became given the determination of going quietly which meant committing suicide and his kin could be saved. If Rommel had refused then his kin might have been sent to concentration camps or killed. Even to the tip he became a gentleman and saved his kin risk-free. i assume as a Brit i could could say that he became a bad guy by using fact he became on the element of the Germans, yet i won't think of undesirable of the guy in any respect.

Yes he should. Easily. He is one of the few commanders through history I truly admire. Look past the Nazi badge and at the man himself. Do some research and watch a documentary or two. He was a great man & a fine commander.

One of the greatest strategists of the 20th Century; he was a military man and unlike Himmler and Goebels; he cared little for what the Nazi party did; he was admired and respecte, not only by his soldiers, but by the Allies.

He was implicated (wrongfully in my opinion) of having knowledge of the assasination attempt on Hitler and was given a choice, to be judged in the "Volksgerichtshof" (People's Court) or commit suicide; he chosed the latter; afterwards, he was given a state funeral and hailed as a hero by Hitler.

Many of his tactics are studied today in West Point.

Absolutely. Infact, I believe his political affiliation was something he regretted, not because it was a bad idea but because he felt military commanders should not have a political affiliation. Which I only wish our Generals sought such a philosophy..well, Colin Powell did...the one person I want to run for President...ugh...
Rommel was an amazing field marshal.

He is and always will be respected as a great commander. He is, after all, The Desert Fox. And he saw the error of Hitler's ways and tried to aid those who wanted to overthrow him. An enemy, but one worthy of respect, certainly.

Of course he should, he was a great military leader who in the end layed down his life attempting to stop the atrocities being perpetrated by his commander in chief.
