Speaking from personal experience, having observed what is happening in our own Church, and having spoken to our "non attending members: The biggest cause is greed.
Hockey, soccer, baseball, run the kids here, run the kids there, go out drinking the night before, work and make more money, only day we can sleep in....
I've heard it all. It may be 1 out of 50 that has theological and doctrinal questions or doubts, but it is fun and "feel good" that is pulling people away from God.

The 30k feet answer is that it has been prophesied that this will happen.
The practical answer is that the Church as a whole is becoming increasingly corrupt in many places.
Also, the mega-church movement has gone away from teaching the Bible and people are getting tired of motivational speeches every week.
The churches that do focus on timeless biblical principals often forget about Jesus and become hateful legalists.
So I come back to the statement that it must be so, it has been foretold.

Hi,
a couple of weeks ago I was listening to EWTN about the subject. They said that wicca is the fastest growing religion(hate to use that word to subscribe wicca), due to the internet. The internet is the church of the wicca religion and are focused on young teens and adults. Different television shows help draws people to wicca and pushes them away from the truth and away from the church. My coworker is wicca and I blessed her witch books with Holy Water when she wasn't looking. Keep praying for this awful religion and for the young teens and adults in our church.

Weak Christians don't last, and besides, what's easier to believe? Its easy to go with something when everybody else tells you that you are wrong if you weren't sure about it in the first place! And how do you say the things in the bible didn't happen? You have proof? NO! Why is it that people like you say Christianity is a lie, but you can never prove it?! Talk is SO cheap!

I would obviously say the pollution level is at an all time high and their brains are deteriorating of course. If that were true however that is only hogwash, a boondoggle, a flimflam, a crutch for the weak minded. As Christianity is becoming the number 1 favorite of favorites.

Education and Knowledge.
While there'll always be people who believe in superstitious crap, most people have critical thinking skills and put them to use. This is why the nature of the church is changing: it is less about spiteful God, magic miracles, angels and virgin births and about what Jesus teaches us about life, whether or not he's the son of God.
This is just my nation though, America still likes to instill fear and superstition; at least that's the impression we get.

education is always bad news for faith. the renaissance was the first body-blow, then the enlightenment, then the school acts, and now the progressive raising of the school leaving age.
the cleverest and most widely read people have always been more likely to be atheists or agnostics (christopher marlowe was an atheist, shakespeare probably an agnostic).
there are more clever and widely read people today than at any previous time in history.

WOOOHOOOO CELEBRATION!
I think its because more and more people are becoming better educated, and also sick of the nonesense (Hatered, self righteousness, ignornace etc) that comes out of this particular religions groups and its offspring (eg Islam). I would say it also has to do with christians being somewhat restricted, by public opinion, to be openly violent towards infidels and 'heretics'(other christians), which has made people feel free-er to express their views concerning christianity.
However, christian leaders are always trying to reinvent the religion, so as to keep it alive and kicking the sh.it out of everyone. So they will not just sit back and let disbelief thrive.

As it was ever so prophecied and is true before all our eyes:
"In the last days there will be critical times hard to deal with; people will be lovers of what is wicked and fornication, what is immoral rather than lovers of God and his holy standards; there will be less natural affection to your fellow man/woman, but more selfishness and lovers of iniquity".
We are after all, in the last days. Hold on to your suit of [spiritual] armor because things will get much worse before they get better. Furthermore, we have only scratched the very top surface of "the times of tribulation". Most people are lovers of what is immoral and in opposition to Godly standards.
Bare up and keep close to God.
