PAL is a television standard used in some parts of the world (including the UK ) - the other television standard is NTSC - used in the rest of the world and notably the USA - it is important if you are buying a camcorder that it matches the television standard in your home country.

Don't know about the 'silver' bit - unless it refers to the colour of the outside of the camcorder (as opposed say to black)

I have heard of 'Grey' imports - but I don't think that a website you are buying from would mention that.

What is silver? There are 3 primary analog television systems, PAL, NTSC and SECAM. SECAM is used in France, Russia and affiliated countries. PAL is mostly in Europe, India and Australia. NTSC in North/South America and Asia. There are some minor varients on the primary standards. Digital television and tape has blurred the distinctions because they are frame rate agile and eliminate the sub-carriers entirely.

The -e suffix in the Sony model number means it is intended to be sold in Europe, and thus works with the PAL system. If you purchase/take this to USA or other NTSC country, that makes it a "grey market" item with no factory warranty support. Also the A/V output will be PAL and not work with NTSC appliances. However most computer editing programs can tolorate the variations in file types and make conversions as needed.

The difference is the same as with the tape versions. With NTSC- viewing & recording (aspect ratio 4:3) is same as the tv, while with PAL- viewing & recording (aspect ratio 16:9) is like with the horizontal black lines you see at the top & bottom of your tv screen that makes it wider. And mind you, i prefer pal than ntsc mainly because it records with a higher resolution. Switched? no, you won't be able to watch your video on the tube with a different system. But it doesn't mean you can't use it to other country! Nowadays, There's always the multisystem tube where ever you may be. Preferrably, get a videocam with a system that corresponds with your local system
