I use to be Wiccan. I can teach you everything you need to know.

Wicca is a religion concocted by a man named Gerald Gardner in England circa 1950. Prior to Gardner, there was no Wicca. Gardner's original Wicca seems to have been little more than an excuse for him to be tied up and beaten by strong willed women, according to Adian Kelly, a Wiccan traditionhead and author of "Crafting The Art of Magic".

Wicca is a belief system and almost like a culture. What you see in movies or on tv is not the way it is. Spells and magic just don't suddenly change things. Magic is in fact using and directing your personal energy to aid with a situation and you have to remember the rule of three, what you send out comes back to three fold. If you want some good books... anything by Sliver Ravenwolf, and The Wiccan Mysteries by Raven Grimassi, it reads like a text book, but it gives a lot of history on Wicca. As for groups be careful of the groups you go to. There are many groups out there that say they are Wiccan but are either not educated or have misconceptions. If any groups mentions Satan or sex rites, they are not true Wiccans. Wicca has no belief in Satan and sex rites are very taboo right now in Wicca. Just be careful

Hi Mike,

Firstly, you don't get 'into' Wicca. It is a true religion and a way of life. You will feel drawn to it but don't know why. As in all religions there are many paths to follow. Find out what it is you want from Wicca and it will find you.

Here is a few lines from the Charge of The Goddess which you might find interesting

for if that which you seek,
you find not within yourself,
you will never find it without

To find out more, there are plenty of books in larger libraries. Big bookshops like Waterstone's or Borders have excellent selections within the Mind, Body and Soul sections.

Try to find your 'local' shop. They will have details of Moots (meetings) in your area which you might want to try.

More info also at this website (which looks quite good)

There are some teachers out there...if there is a Witch shop near you check with them and see if they are giving classes or has a bulletin board where announcments are posted.

There are also schools online. Some good, many are not...becareful. You have to understand that Wicca is not about magick but a religion..magick is a tool not the reason. .

Check out www.witchvox.com it is one of the best sites to get info from. They have lists of teachers in different areas that you can contact.
There are also wonderful writers that have been on the scene for a long time and walk their talk.
I suggest books to begin learning about Wicca by :
Pauline Campanelli-Ancient Ways, Dan and Pauline Campanelli-Circles, Groves, and Sanctuaries...Earth Power and Earth, Air, Fire & Water by Scott Cunningham...Solitary Witch by Silver Ravenwolf, Wicca for Life by Raymond Buckland.

First, visit wicca.timerift.net to clear up some of the myths about Wicca. That site has a booklist with reviews on each book. It's well worth visiting. Secondly, witchvox.com will help you meet and connect with other witches and Wiccans, but i advise you practice solitary for at least a year before even thinking of joining a coven. Only read 'to ride a silver broomstick' by Silver Ravenfluff... Sorry... Wolf if you enjoy fiction, because she's full of lies and nonsense and has about as realistic a view on witchcraft as JK Rowling does.

Nowadays I'd start online, and witchvox is as good a starting point as any. You'll quickly find that there's a lot of rubbish online and sometimes it's hard to work out whether a site is actually about paganism or is some sort of role-playing game site, but you'll find that with print books as well.

Sadly, most of the really useful print stuff is only available second-hand, because modern publishers seem to prefer hocum. 'Spiral Dance' and 'Drawing Down the Moon' are pretty good or, for an alternative viewpoint, try to find stuff by Janet and Stewart Farrar or Alan Richardson, both being informative and thankfully free of the worst excesses of modern-day trash.

There are a lot of great books out there that can help someone who is interested in the craft. I have noticed though that most "intro to Wicca" books say pretty much the same things. Each of them are written in different formats, and some are easier to learn depending on what you prefer. Scott Cunningham has some pretty good books for beginners. But out of all of the dozens of books i have read, there is one that has really changed my life. Christopher Penczak's "The Inner Temple of Witchcraft" is a great book for beginners.

There are plenty of books on the topic, but bear in mind that there's a lot of rubbish posing as Wicca that isn't "actual" Wicca. I'd recommend learning about Wicca's history and common practices first before looking at books that detail how to conduct those practices. That, and any good Wiccan will be happy to fill you in anyway.

Hopefully you are 18 or over. Try connecting with you local pagans. Witchvox website has local organizations listed. If you cannot connect with live people then Scott Cunningham's' Wicca, a Guide for the solitary Practitioner and Living Wicca are good books and Raymond Bucklands Wicca for One and Bucklands complete Book of Witchcraft.

I started my journey online and learned alot about different paths and where they can take you. My husband bought me a book called "The Solitairy Witch" and I have learned alot from it. Google Wiccan or Wicca and explore all of the different links. You HAVE to study for a full year before casting. I never had the time with 3 kids, and there's ALOT involved. It's a beautiful belief, you will know where you want to go once you start exploring. Good luck to you :)

Start with Witchvox.com - its a great way to learn about others in your area and includes metaphysic shops. Read, read, read. Read everything you can get your hands on - including the more controversial authors. It'll help you to determine for yourself what information is valid to the path you are seeking. Just remember, if you decide to meet anyone, do it in a public place. Not everyone out there is interested in your well being. There are a lot of weirdos.
