That is the whole point.
If we don't pass from judgment, then we have failed already, As we all fall short and have sinned.
But the good news is that, if we have faith that Jesus Christ Died on the cross and 3 days later was brought back from the dead by the holy father. Then It is no longer us who is judged but Jesus.
Sins (unholy behavior) separate us from the holy father.
So when we die we have an infinite barrier between us and god. And according to scripture nothing we can do of our own can breach that barrier.
But Through faith we over come this obstacle.
It go's like this-
All sin must be punished-
Sin has an infinite debt. Eternal suffering-
Jesus is infinite-
he suffered for a finite time.
An infinite being suffering for a finite time is the same as an finite being suffering for an infinite time.
Its the same total.
The debt is paid infull for all who believe.
It also says that this message of faith and punishment is supposed to sound foolish to most of the people on earth.
Paul said "since man though the wisdom of the world never knew god(we were to busy making neutron bombs and breast implants) it pleased god to save the faithful by the foolishness preached."
It sound silly on purpose.
Yet this "foolish" message has effected the world more than any other in histoy.
Amazing. All other religions want to sound wise but this one trys to sound foolish.

God promises that he will punish the wicked. If God is good, he must be just and punish lawbreakers. So how do you know if you are a lawbreaker? Take yourself through the ten commandments and you will know whether or not it makes sense that there is a hell.
See http://www.thegoodpersontest.com to find out if you're going to heaven or hell.
God will not grade you on a curve. Put yourself in a courtroom, and you're guilty of breaking ten laws. You tell the judge "I did the best I can!" If the judge lets you go, and "grades you on a curve" he is corrupt. According to the bible, "there is none good, no not one" (Psalm 14, 53; Romans 3). The bible says that anyone who is guilty of breaking one part of the law, is guilty of breaking it all (James 2). Just bring yourself through the ten commandments. If a person has lied, "all liars will have their part in the lake of fire." (Revelation 2).
Jesus makes it very clear that hell is forever (Revelation 14). Jesus describes it where the worm doesn't die, and the fire isn't quenched; weeping and gnashing of teeth; outer darkness. Revelation also states, that death and Hades will be cast into the lake of fire as well (Revelation 20).
Now, pertaining to your question specifically, I want to make something very clear. The bible is crystal clear that there is eternal torment. Where Christians disagree is what Hades, Hell, and Lake of Fire is. Here is my view. I believe that when an unsaved person dies, he/she consciously awaits judgement in Hades, the holding place (Luke 16, 2 Peter 2).
The bible also says that true Christians (not every who professes to be a Christian is a Christian... see Matthew 7) go directly to be with Jesus Christ (Phillippians 1).
Then there is the resurrection of the dead, and the people will be judged at the Great White Throne Judgement. There is some disagreement over whether or not Christians will be at that specific throne, but we DO know that anyone who is not found in the book of Life is cast into the Lake of Fire. The bible calls this the "second death" (Revelation 20). Christians will be judged, but not for their sins. They will be judged for their works. I believe that this is what the bible refers to as hell (lake of fire).
Remember that God is just, and he cannot have sin in his presence. But he is also kind and merciful and loving and will save you if you fling yourself on his mercy by repenting and trusting in Jesus Christ (GOD the son) who bore the wrath of God for your sins and my sins. Then he rose from the dead and defeated death! Don't go to God because you're afraid of hell. Go to God because his is so KIND to SAVE you from what you deserve! What we ALL deserve!

If no one accepted Christ's sacrifice for their sins, then heaven would be an empty place I suppose, but of course millions have been saved through their faith, and hopefully many more will be.
As for those who don't accept it, I personally believe that they will just die. I don't believe that someone who has ignored God throughout say, the 80 - 90 years of their life will burn in hell forever because of that. God is a God of perfect justice, and sentencing someone to eternal torment would not be a just punishment, whatever they have done in their life.

It's true that our sinful nature condemns us to hell. Only the saving grace of God through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus can keep us from getting uncomfortably hot.
So heaven will eventually be populated by mankind, but the population will be limited by our inability to simply accept this free gift of salvation.
When you get down to the real nitty-gritty, God has only two rules for us to follow – "Believe in the one He has sent" (John 6:28-29) and let His death purchase a pardon for our sins. (John 3:16). Not to difficult.

yes, heaven would remain totally desolate, because we all sin- however remember this- Jesus came to earth out of love for us, so we would not have to be in hell. You actually are asking some very smart questions- without Christ we all deserve hell, with Christ we get what we do not deserve HEAVEN and a personal relationship with Him,

Christians beleive that no one can be good enough to earn heaven.
I like to think of it this way. The only way a person will go to hell is if they want to.
God in His (or Her) unlimited love has given us free will to choose. Our most important choice is to freely decide to accept or reject God's constant offer of spending eternity with Him in heaven. God will respect the choice to reject Him.
With love in Christ.

Nearer the truth than you think - although we get to choose while on earth. People think they will have a great time in hell, getting drunk and going to parties but it too is a lie! great joke!

That would be the case if it weren't for grace - the grace which comes through Jesus Christ, resulting in the forgiveness of sins.

Only those with a mortal sin on their soul will go to Hell.
A venial sin will send you to Purgatory, but you'll eventually go to Heaven.
