first - the fish DOES NOT represent Jesus. The fish is used to represent the christian him/herself. Back when christians were persecuted and killed on site (shortly after Jesus left) people who followed Jesus' teachings needed a way to recognize one another. Because Jesus called his disciples Fishers of Men, it was standard practice for a christian who suspected the person they were talking to was also christian to draw the fish symbol in the dirt with their foot. If the other party was christian, they would in turn draw the symbol. THe word Jesus in the fish (regardless of the language it's written in) was palced just recently in history to show dedication to Jesus as a response to anti-christian parties mocking christians by using the fish symbol in other ways.
There are few "symbols" used to represent Christ through history. The most common are the lion (of Judah) and the lamb (of God - the sacrifice.)
Tattoos are very personal. Religion is very personal. Your walk with God is very personal. DO NOT GET A TATTOO UNTIL YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN OF WHAT YOU WANT, AND MAKE IT PERSONAL. Feel free to use other photos and ink as inspiration, but I HIGHLY recommend making it your own personal symbol. You can always find a good artist and sit and talk to them about what religion and christianity mean to you and they may be able to help you find the perfect representation.
Having said that, many people choose to have scripture, common Bible story scenes and various other memorable scriptural moments tattooed. Bottom line is, do what represents your walk; for example, I have a sun in the middle of my upper back with my wife's and kids' names encircling it. This tattoo has two meanings: my wife and kids are the light of my life and my family's very existence is due to and revolves around the Son.

There are lots of symbols for the Christian faith. For example, a fish represents Jesus, a dove represents peace, a candle represents God, and fire represents the Holy Spirit. These are just a few, I'm sure there are more.
