Alternative medicine has its place like Western conventional medicine does, and I personally believe that integrative medicine is the best approach.
As a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I know that alternative or complementary modalities very effective, in some cases much more effective than conventional medicine. They work well for pain, for health maintenance and disease prevention, and can work amazing things for more complex things like acute otitis media, pneumonia, etc.
However, conventional medicine has its place too, because when it comes to advanced diseases, cancer, etc, it is often necessary to use the Western approach.
I personally have an acupuncturist as my primary care physician who is in charge of keeping me healthy, managing my thyroid condition (I am hyperthyroid and acupuncture controls it very well with only herbs, no western medications), but I also see my Western doctor once a year to get the necessary blood work done and all the other screening tests.
I'm always very careful in determining anything as a cure-all or the best...everyone and every situation is very unique and requires a unique approach.

we can't easily tell. that's the reason why there's ALTERNATIVE medicine... some medicines can't fully help/alleviate sickness on something.
these alternative medicines are given to patients as another option than taking the commercialized or common meds that we already use. these are herbs and other supplemental meds that doctors recommend.
but before you take such, you sure has to get the doctor's advise first. only them know the authenticity of it and it's precautions.

Alternative medicines work empirically in most cases. More scientific coordinated study is needed.

Since orthodox medicine is THE Number One Killer in the US, the alternatives can't be that deadly.
