What a nightmare, personally I would put my hazard warning light on and try to get myself to the hard shoulder and call for help. What else could you do?

I've had my car stall twice on the freeway, once from a spark plug wire, once from the alternator. Although the engine shut off, I was still able to coast over to the side of the road safely. So, I don't know if a car would actually just stop in the middle lane and not move. If it did, I suppose I would get on my cell phone really fast and call the city police or highway patrol. As for the chaos from the other cars around me, I would just have to ignore it. If someone yells a comment, I would ask them if they want to help me push my car to the side of the rode. I'm sure they would just keep on driving.

I would get over to one of the shoulders with the momentum the car still has left call a tow truck or whatever. And then i would see if its something I could do to get the engine to start and at least get it to my house or the shop if its running good then where I was going. I would say if that happened though and you were fortunate enough to get it to start again I would be even in the left hand lane with the gas pedal almost all the way to the floor to get off the freeway or take the next exit whatever I could do first.

well put it this way if your engine stops you still have quite a great amount of speed from your wheels. If are in the middle lane the best advice would be to act cautiously using your signals and turn into the 1st lane and then onto the hard shoulder. Although if you are in the far right lane then you are better of if you cant get into the other lanes slowing down and pulling onto the central reservation, i know yes that sounds stupid but you do not want to kill yourself neither anybody else. Always act with caution although some things are easier said than done.

You don't say if it's a manual or automatic vehicle. If it's automatic you have my sympathy - not much you can do except put your hazards on and wait for the impact of a not very observant driver. If it's a manual then you can slip it into neutral and coast to the shoulder. Otherwise if you are stopped just put it in first gear and crank the key (with the clutch out). Not very good for the engine or its mountings but it will move. DON'T FORGET THE HAZARD LIGHTS THO !!!

I take it you mean your engine dies. I would use what momentum I had to get over to the "Safety Lane" in neutral if i could. If it stopped dead in the middle lane the chances are you would be too I don't suppose you would really care,

Put your hazard lights on IMMEDIATELY. Do NOT get out of your vehicle if you are in the middle lane. If you have got a mobile phone with you, call the police and give them your position.

As you said "motorway" I'll assume you are in the UK. So...
"If you cannot get your vehicle on to the hard shoulder:
Do not attempt to place any warning device on the carriageway.
Switch on your hazard warning lights
Leave your vehicle only when you can safely get clear of the carriageway."
(Having said that, we used to be told never to leave your vehicle, but to switch on hazards and await assistance from a Police m/way patrol.)

Well if your in the middle or right lane then you must be going quite fast.. Surely you could roll to the hard shoulder with your hazards on? If not then I would call the police, shut my eyes and hope for the best ...lol

Pretty unfortunate mate, personally, if I were in the car behind and I had the time, I would get out and help you push it out of the way of the traffic. I assume this happened in peak hour.
Personally, I couldn't give a hoot what everyone else behing me thinks, and am more than happy to drop my daks and show them the moon!
Some people need to remember, your car breaking down in traffic is a great deal more stressful than being stuck behind a breakdown.

Cars don't suddenly stop unless they meet something in their path. 25 years of driving has tought me that. Even a blown tyre won't make you stop .
Should my engine cut out I would put my hazard lights on and roll/push into the slow lane so I can get to the hard shoulder.
