You can look at real estate listings, either to buy or to rent, on newyork.craigslist.org or on the classifieds section of the New York Times. Prices will vary a lot depending on how large the apartment is (of course) and where in NYC it is. In central Manhattan, you would be doing very well to find even a tiny studio apartment for less than $1500/mo (rental) or $400,000 (purchase price).

I looked at a studio apt in greenich village this summer when i was there on vacation $1900.00 saw 1 and 2 bedroom in other parts of ny city and they ranged from 2400 - 3800 a month.

To rent what amounts to be a glorified walk-in closet, you're looking at about $2000 a month, plus utilities.
To buy, it's easily several million dollars.
