The 40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games, but it can play PS1 games.

The 40GB PS3 doesn't have the digital camera flash card slots, and it only has 2 USB ports.

The 60GB PS3 can play almost every PS1 and PS2 game ever made, it has 4 USB ports, and it has the digital camera flash card slots.

And of course, the 60GB model has more hard drive space than the 40GB PS3.

Both models have built in WiFi, Blu-Ray, Web browser, Free online play, Bluetooth, and the same technology.

As well as the obvious difference in hard disk capacity there are a few changes. The 40 Gb has no backward compatability so you can't play PS2/1 games and also has no connections for memory cards
