Is a driver's license and green card enough? Is a Canadian visa needed or a passport?
I am a US citizen, and I know I only need to bring my birth certificate and driver’s license, but my husband is a resident. He doesn't want to renew his passport for his home country (Tanzania), because he will be applying for citizenship next January, and he will then get a US passport.
I know after the beginning of the year a passport will be required for both of us.

If you are driving and coming sometime soon, you can cross the border with a green card.
The passport isn't even required for the beginning of next year. They keep postponing the date because the demand for passports is so high because of it.
Edit: The CBSA site has been down or updating the last couple of days, finally found in the second link where US Permanent resident is mentioned.
