1) make sure the cat has a safe and secure place to be that the dog can not get to. Preferably your bedroom. put up baby gates so the cat can get in and out and doesn't have to worry about the dog. Tall cat perches/trees will help too, letting the cat observe the dog and not be with in the reach of the dog.
2) unless you have changed his food lately, chances are it isn't the food giving him gas. Maybe he's sampling the dog's food
3) spend time with the cat when the dog isn't around. Give treats, praise, patting, cuddling, and play time.
4) make sure the litterbox is out of the reach of the dog, not only because dogs like the deposits in a box, but the cat needs to feel safe when using it. If not, you'll find the deposits around the house.

Good luck.

Well, make him feel loved too, meaning the cat. When you and your cat haven't just chilled in a while put the dog somewhere and just chill with the cat, it may sound mean to the dog to just seperate it, but your cat needs it. Also is the dog being aggressive to the cat, then you may have a problem and the dog may have to go. DO NOT try to force the dog and cat together, it will only make matters worse. The food thing, a owner has to do what a owner has to do, change the food and see if it helps. Even try looking for foods that say helps with gas and what not.

strange thing for your vet to say. Older cats don't always adapt to a dog being brought into the house,a friend of mine got a dog she already had a cat which she had had for 4 years and hers was very stressed eventually it stopped coming into the house it was living outside and only coming to the door for food every time she tried to bring it in it would do a runner this went on for a year, eventually she managed to catch it as the weather was getting severely cold and she was concerned for it's welfare, it was crawling with fleas as she had not been able to get hold of it to flea it,and it was still stressed with the dog being there, so she ended up having to find a new home for it.It went to a nice old lady who lives in the country and she spoils it rotten.

I think Connie's suggestions are excellent. You might want to look into flower essences to use on the cat. Go to http://www.spiritessence.com and read about their use with cats (and other animals).

You can get Dr. Hovfe's "New Beginnings" for your cat for under $20 and it could help a lot to reduce his stress. You just shake the bottle well and put three to four drops on his fur between his ears. Use the essences very intensely at first - four times a day. You can taper off on the number of times after about a week. They can't harm him in any way so since you will have the bottle use them as often as you want.
