I know for sure that you aren't supposed to use bleach or any detergent with bleach in it.
Other than that, I'm not sure. My husband just bought some but they are still getting worked on at the tailor's so we haven't crossed that bridge yet. I found this website with a little more info on care of the uniform, but surprisingly it didn't mention the part about no bleach and I'm positive my husband told me that......go figure?!

OK, here is a little more thorough answer--it was something shephard AFB put out.
Q13: What are the washing and care requirements for the ABU?
A13: In order to maximize service life and maintain optimum performance, the following instructions should be followed when caring for the ABU: Wash in warm water with detergent containing no optical brighteners or bleach. Tumble dry at low heat. The use of starch, sizing and any process that involves dry-cleaning or steam press will adversely affect the treatments and durability of the uniform and is not authorized.

The new Army uniform (which the new AF uniform looks a lot like) is recommended to use any detergent that does not contain color brighteners and no starch. Are they a 'wash-and-wear?' Because if they are, you shouldn't have to even iron them. If you aren't sure if the detergent doesn't have color brighteners, just use Woolite. I use Tide Coldwater and haven't had a problem.

I was told to use a kind that does NOT keep colors vibrant. Reason I was told is that these detergents have things in them that will make the uniform glow when someone is looking at them with night vision.
