The college counselor needs to talk to your family. This is ridiculous.

I'm a 15 year old kid, and have had depression and anxiety for virtually my whole life. I woke up feeling like **** everyday, I lost a lot of good friends, and pretty felt awkward and sad all the time. After a lot of suffering I told my parents. Now I'm on some meds and finally feel myself and who I want to be. I say what I want to say and I can finally get **** done, since I'm not sulking in a puddle of despair. TELL YOUR PARENTS. They will at least be happy to KNOW how you feel. My brother was depressed, got into hard drugs, and nearly died... My parents didnt know. They felt so guilty and hated themselves for letting it happen. Now hes in a good college getting straight A's. If you can't afford meds I dont know what to say. Just never settle for misery because nobody desirves that. Find a way. Also, it would be good to find someone to be close to, be it a family member or a best friend. I was in a school with only 50 kids for the first 9 years of my acedemic life. When I first went to highschool it was a harsh change. My best friend was going through the same thing and we pretty much survived because of each other. Sorry to go on about myself, I just think it might give some perspective.

Is your counselor at school the same as a family physician? If they can prescribe meds and care, then I am thinking there is insurance for you through the school. If the counselor is not a doctor, I suggest you go talk to the family doctor for a second opinion and support if needed to cope with your parents.
I am sorry you are scared to talk to your parents. What a shame that you cannot turn to them at a time like this. What is so ironic is that if your parents think they can control your mental health issues, then they are the ones who are crazy - they may have dodged the certification but the obvious is indeed the obvious.

Depression can be caused by a chemical imbalance and has nothing to do with being crazy. Of course if it is untreated you can become crazy. Since you are in college you are now old enough to be considered an adult. You need to tell your parents that they do not have the power to allow or disallow depression since it is based on a chemical imbalance in your body. They may have said this one day out of frustration and didn't mean for you to take it to heart. I'm sure they wouldn't want you to continue to suffer because of some careless remark they made. Talk to your parents like an adult and you may be surprised at their response. Don't wait any longer to get on antidepressants. It will make such a big difference in your life that you can't even imagine right now. Whenever I go through a tragic event my chemicals get all out of whack and I have to go on antidepressants for about 6 months at a time. As soon as the chemicals are back in balance I do fine. So don't let anyone intimidate you about taking care of yourself when the help is out there. And stop being scared of your parents. They really are there to help you.

if they feel that way they must have stereo typed symptoms. some people are different with the same illness or have a little extra to alter it so its blamed on something else. they know you and love you just the same so to say that your a different person because your a little sad... sounds like you caught it early. beware of ALOT of meds out there. ive been on quite a few but i was misdiagnosed. i have anxiety depression. my mom used to not believe me either so i know it doesnt help when you Want help and people are in denial.
be careful about how you go about it. like i havent been feeling myself lately and im sure its temporary but i want to try this or my doctor recommended this... good luck

Get to an actual doctor soon. See if your counselor would be willing to meet with your parents. i would never in a million years tell my children how they can and can't feel and what sort of mental illnesses they can have ,that's just stupid. One can't predict that kind of thing, nor can be it be controlled. Your parents need some serious help for thinking that it can be. Perhaps they need to see a counsellor themselves. Get some medication and someone to talk to you help you through this.

Tell them that depression is an imbalance of chemicals in your body and that you cannot help it. I don't like meds but I have seen the result of anti-depressants and they have been fairly good results.
I never suggest dying, so try and find some good friends to talk to. It will help you a lot.

Is there any way you can get free counseling at school? maybe you don't need meds, just someone to point you in the right direction. if not then i guess you'll have to talk to them, but look at it this way, which is better, a ten minut argument with mom and pops, or years of suffering from depression? i'm sure they will help you regardless

Dear Mackenzie. Depression and anxiety are serious illness that worsen as time goes by. They are caused by a real chemical imbalance in the brain that causes lack of energy, lack of concentration, feelings of worthlessness, etc. Your parents have to understand that its not just sadness (like experienced by the common people) but a real serious illness. It´s so important not to live, undiagnosed and untreated. Medicines help to balance brain neurotrasmiters and to diminish the symptoms. Acupuncture cures depression. Please talk to them and tell them the things I mentioned in my answer. Argentox2@yahoo.com

Bless your heart. Needing medication for depression is no different than needing medication for a heart problem or insulin for diabetes. Would they "not allow" you to have those health problems? Maybe you should put it to them like that. When depression gets bad enough it isn't something you can just decide to snap out of. You need help. I hope you'll be able to get it.
