What can we do to resolve this issue? Personally I think our govt is pursuing some really expensive and ineffective ways of going about it. I predict in 10 years youll be hearing how the fence along the border had 0% result. I think the problem were having is that we are tackling this issue just like the drug issue... were going after the supply side of it. We need a demand side fix. That is, we need to take away peoples desire to come over. I propose we declare that it is legal to buy and sell humans if they are caught within our borders illegally. That will take away incentives. I know it sounds harsh but its all I can imagine would fix this. If we dont do something drastic then we ought to just do nothing and save our money because what were doing isnt working.

Margrete - The stats show that the things youre talking about dont work very well. Theyre just expensive. I know its slavery. But extreme problems require extreme solutions. And with a demand side incentive like "hey we can have a slave if we can catch an illegal," private citizens will take up law enforcements role and start catching them. Then when word spreads theyll stop coming. Now if you believe that living in a society where slavery is legal is a worse scenario than having an illegal problem then we can only go on either doing these expensive things that dont work or else accept that its just an issue we'll have to live with.

We also need to attack the employers of illegal immigrants. Fiercely. Inspect their buisnesses on a regular basis and throw them in prison if they don't clean up their acts. No coorprate loopholes, no exceptions. Prison.

This is another good example of our government wasting the taxpayers money. They are going after the supply side, when the demand side if the real problem. Too many businesses go after the cheap labor. Stop that from happening and half the problem will be solved. States can stop the other half by cutting off the illegal immigrants free benefits.

You can't buy and sell humans, that's slave trade. The fence in NM is working, there is a drastic decrease of illegal aliens crossing. So, they are running to Arizona. We need to enforce the laws we already have, crack down hard on employers, implement OK laws, build a fence, more patrol at the border, and use the latest technology to detect fraudulent SS cards. No more sanctuary cities. The states should do what FL has done with DL. No one can renew their DL without proof of status. This has gone into effect this year.

Stay in the countries we're born in - if you must go somewhere else go legally. Just like you can fight poverty by working or fight hunger by making yourself a peanutbutter sandwich (when you're genuinely hungry).

Seriously, though, you are right in that a big part of the problem is the 'jobs magnet' - the employers of illegals are as culpable for illegal immigration as the illegals themselves. And, since there are far fewer employers of illegals than illegals (since most employ more than one), and they are much easier to find and punish, concentrating enforcement on them would be a way of addressing the demand side.

Your 'modest proposal' OTOH, would still be addressing the supply side - trying to dry up suply by attaching an horrific penalty to violating the border. Much like the idea of shooting illegals on sight or laying minefields in the border region, rather than merely building a fence.

Racism/Illegal immigration started centuries ago when the whites "settled the West" though Genocide of the Native Americans. Hitler killed less people in Europe than our ancestors.

Spanish and Latin are languages from Spain and Italy. Latin has been the language of the Christian Bible since Roman Emperor Constantine formed the Christian Bible, but Native Americans are NOT European white and therefore not Spanish or Latino. Some people need to learn history of Native Americans as well as their own personal religion.

However, as most people think, Aliens are from outerspace and as rhetorically scary as is anything illegal.

Freetrade increased people moving to the US (National Geographics 2007). It was supposed to help people in other countries but in many cases is slave labor for rich whites. Free trade is Slave labor, such as 13 year olds working 16 hour days, 7 days a week for pennies (Source: Walmart: the high cost of low prices). Time to enforce human rights in all US factories in the US and abroad.

Anyone care to walk a mile in someone else's shoes? Or too racist.
