These figures belie the notion that government can relieve financial strains in
Social Security and other programs simply importing younger immigrant workers. The
fiscal impact of an immigrant worker is determined far more by skill level than by age.
Low-skill immigrant workers impose a net drain on government finance as soon as they
enter the country and add significantly to those cost every year they remain. Actually,
older low-skill immigrants are less costly to the U.S. taxpayer since they will be a burden
on the fisc for a shorter period of time."

Darkwolf. . . you make a very good point. Most people who have not been to Mexico may not realize it is a very beautiful country with beautiful cities. The people crossing the borders illegally are not representative of the whole country. And from what I understand the economy of Mexico is doing very well which is why Mexico is unlikely to make any real effort to contain its poor people.

Clearly there initial impact is they are a drain on the local economy.

One could make the argument that the local economy benefits by them but this is short sighted.
Look at the impact if even one of them shows up at a local area hospital.
An average hospital bill is $3200 for an ER visit. Since they have no documentation or insurance there immediate relief for an injury is the ER where they will not immediately held to any government scrutiny.
That $3200 is eventually paid for by the local areas citizens and then again eventually by the states citizens. That measly $2000 they MIGHT have put back into the local economy has now ballooned to over $8000 in burdens to the taxpayers.
Multiply that by the amount of average daily illegals entering our borders and now you see a good portion of why our health care system is collapsing around us.

I worked in a hospital for 4 years and have seen what effect these people have had just on our health care system. This doesn't even include there #1 favorite law breaking activity which is Driving While Intoxicated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can provide you with endless examples of that repercussion on a local level.

The economy isn't good mostly because of the war and keep in mind that not only Hispanics are on welfare, but blacks and whites as well. Also, remember that immigrants aren't only from central America. If president Bush wants to put up a wall on the Mexican border then so be it, but he has to put that on all other countries. From Asia, Europe and every other country that is affecting our economy. and not all people are the same. Some are free loaders and bad people, but there are good and hardworking people that have been here for many years.

Legal immigration also causes strains as well

Last year the Mississauga News (Canada) ran two stories
1) Drunk driving was up, and police blamed the increase on the fact that we have a tonne of immigrants from places were drinking and driving is still a social norm.

2) Per Capita Welfare recipients were up, because our federal government now has a policy of allowing immigrants with no marketable skills.

The hell with statistics, your probably right though. But as an american citizen, we need to legalize the ones that are here, because, I'm sure in hell am not going to wash my big suvs. Let them cut our grass or cook our meals at fast food junkets. Let them pick our crops. If they want those kind of jobs, and I know you know what jobs i'm talking about, let them. If they progress as legal immigrants, so be it. But, we as citizens can't let them dictate of immigration policies.

I see almost nothing that is sustainably making the economy better.

Who's arguing this, by the way? I'm much more calmly opposed to uncontrolled immigration than most people, but I haven't heard this one before.
