Ok. So my cat is about 1 and a half years old. The latest things she has done are: broke and shredded the blinds, and pulled the wallpaper off of the wall. She also scratched a few walls up and the trim and a bunch of other stuff. My dad is getting so mad at her that he says that if she ruins one more thing he is getting rid of her! And of course I dont want that to happen. I really, really dont want to get her declawed due to the pain it will put her through. Is there anythings else I can do besides declaw her!!??

Does she have a scratching post? If not, get one asap! Cats need to scratch, so make sure she has someplace that is allowed. Scratching posts should be at least three feet tall, have a sturdy base, and be covered in sisal or rope. Top Cat makes a fabulous one. Sprinkle or spray catnip on the post to encourage your cat to use it. If you see her scratching something she shouldn't, take her to the post and place her about half-way up the side. Praise her as soon as her nails dig in and continue praising and give her a treat if she scratches the post.

Another option is to use Soft Paws - plastic caps that fit over the cat's nails. They do need to be replaced every few weeks, as the cat's nails naturally slough off their outer layer.

Place double-sided tape on surfaces that she keeps scratching. Most cats don't like the feel and will avoid scratching there.

Scratching is a natural thing for a cat. They do it for a varity of reasons. 1) a good full body stretch 2) to mark their territory [this is MINE] 3) to clean their claws - since they grow from the inside out, they need to remove the outer layer of the claw - some people call this sharpening.

Cats use furniture and trim and walls because they are big sturdy objects that don't move when they try to do what comes naturally to them. To avoid the damage, you need to provide her an appropriate place to do it. A scratching post/pole/tree that is AT LEAST as tall as your hip and is sturdy. If it is short and wobbly, they'll just return to the furniture. There are cardboard ones that a lot of cats seem to like too that are available at most megamarts..

put the tree/pole near where the cat is currently scratching, and redirect and praise when the cat uses the tree.

You can then start moving the tree to where you want it. HOWEVER, you need to keep the tree in the same general area. do not banish it to some unused portion of the house because the cats want to be where you are.

an immediate solution is softpaws. They are 'fake nails' for cats. little gel caps you glue on. VERY effective at reducing the distruction.

You need to get her a couple scratching posts. At least one vertical one that is high enough for her to stretch up and scratch and one horizontal one. Place them in areas of the house that she uses frequently. Generally these are places where the family frequents. If you put them in a room where nobody goes they will do you no good.
