Westchester would be your best option. Lots of quiet towns within an hour of the city. Westchester has two Metro North train lines. One runs along the Hudson River and the other runs through the middle of the county. I use to live in Tarrytown and it was a 45 min train ride to grand central. It's a very quiet, beautiful, historic town that is affordable. Most small towns along the Hudson river are. There are many multi-family houses that provide more space for your $$ with parking and/or yard/porch.

An hour drive time? That gives you quite a few options. western Long Island, Westchester, Rockland, the very southern ends of Orange and Dutchess counties, southern Connecticut, and northern New Jersey. The closer to the city you are, the more expensive it's going to be. I personally would look at some real estate websites or apartment rental websites to get an idea of pricing. Remember, you also have to factor in commuting costs, so what sounds like a bargain might not be.
