I adopted a five month old calico kitten yesterday. She's very sweet and loving and I was told she was sick. I still wanted her. I haven't seen any signs of sneezing that I was told of. She's very calm for her age and doesn't seem to want to eat. She does drink but for the most part she'll take a couple of bits and eat no more. Is this normal? Is she just adjusting? I know she likes the food because she ate as soon as I brought her home. I was also told she has blood in her stool but she hasn't done the deed yet so I'm still keeping my eyes open. Please help!

take her to the vet....everyone is going to tell you this....so please just take her to the vet. They can fix whatever is wrong w/ her before it gets worse. It will save a lot of heartache b/c one day you might find her dead.

sorry to say this, because since you are posting here I'm assuming you want to avoid this expense, but a vet visit is in order.

I just adopted a kitten that I fostered for several months. She was quite healthy till she went to be neutered. After that she slept for three days - which was very unlike her. I got concerned and took her temp. She had a very high fever so I gave her fluids and antibiotics (vet recommended) and after two days she recovered into her happy energenitic self.

It is normal for a kitten to be a little calm and reserved the first day after a new home, but they adapt very quickly. They usually eat like piggies too, because they are doing so much growing at this time.

Vets usually say, if there is no input and or output it is time for a visit..

besides, she'll need vaccines to stay healthy, and she needs to be spayed, so you need to get her into a vet anyway.

You were told she was sick. Did they give you any details on the illness? Was it a congenital birth defect such as heart or is it a virus or something?

Sometimes congenital defects like the heart can make your kitty quiet and give them a loss of appetite. It is important to know if this is the issue as it is easily managed with medication. If it is not heart related or congenital then you should consider other issues.

If the kitty has had congestion, has lack of appetite and lack of vigor, she may have a serious viral or bacterial illness (in some cases even transferable to humans). You need to take her to the vet and get that checked out.

FIV/FIP is transferrable to other cats and always terminal, so if this is the case you definately want to address it sooner than later. If this is the case then you need to take care of her, make sure she is not exposing other animals (indoor only) and give her the best life possible, knowing she will pass sooner than others.

Other infections such as feline distemper have to run their course, but also need symptomatic treatment (you treat the symptoms) and you need to watch for secondary infections that can be treated with antibiotics.
