Since they act in the person of Christ, isn't the person of Christ male?

Well Jesus wasn't a woman according to any Gospel.

Of course women are equally valid in the eyes of God, but that doesn't make Jesus a woman.

Because it is a control issue! Just because Jesus was a man at a time when a woman would have been stoned to death for even claiming to be the savior as soon as she says it once. how was God suppost to be able to save us that way? Any way the Catholic church did have deaconesses in the early church. Jesus also had women disiples. None of the apostles could have been women because they would have been stoned to death. Women were treated like property at the time so they were limited compared to men. It isn't like that at least in america and sometimes a congregation needs a leader who is a motherly figure rather than a fatherly figure; just like we need God to be more motherly rather than fatherly.

It's not a "nail in the eye of modernity." It's a grafting of the Roman patriarchal system on a movement that was remarkably egalitarian in its early days.

Paul, in his Epistles, makes numerous comments about fellow female evangelists and apostles, sending them greetings in the same sentence as his male counterparts. Also, archeological evidence exists that, in the early days of the Church, women were the equals of men in terms of church leadership. A frieze in Asia Minor shows Paul and a woman standing side by side, in the same size, and having the identical poses of one hand held up in the "teaching" position. Oddly enough, later vandals smashed that "teaching hand" on the woman and scratched her eyes out (literally!) , but left Paul alone.

yes. that's true. there must be a very good reason why Jesus was born a male and not as a female. there should never be any female priests in the Catholic Church. I agree with the Catholic Church.

Because it's sexist. Women are equally valid.

Perhaps the Church is simply afraid of the potential number of molestation charges were they to double the available candidature for priesthood...
