There are many deaths... It depends on which one you are referring to...

The first death is the death of "the old self" from a sinner (who is guided by Satan) into one who is saved and "born again" unto a "new self" (then guided by the spirit of God).

Then the physical death of the body which could anywhere from painless as in sudden death to very painful from sickness or injury.

In the afterlife, the final death referred to in the Bible is the death of your soul should you miss Heaven... This pain is so unimaginable that there are no words that can even come close to describing the suffering yet to come, because the human mind has only experienced and knows of a finite existence, not an infinite existence.

While on the subject of death to a soul, it should be understood that moments after death the soul moves on to either hades for the unsaved or paradise for the saved until the great day of judgment.

When you sleep, your spirit will often leave your body, enter the spiritual realm, only to return before you wake. Dreams seem real, because they often are, but in the spiritual realm. Spirits sometimes don't even know they are dead, they have left their dead body, but are unaware, that they no longer have a body. The transition through dead, is not much different than entering into a dream.

Well in Star Trek IV , spock told bones he had to die in order for him to discuss it with him. Need a point of reference. But some say its like try to live through a plastic bag. I had a friend pass on once but he fell through a hole in the afterlife (he is clumsy) and fell back to life. He told me it was like always forgetting your keys.

Eccl. 9:5: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.”

Ps. 146:4: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts [“thoughts,” KJ, 145:4 in Dy; “all his thinking,” NE; “plans,” RS, NAB] do perish.”
