Not so much a conversation, but if you have a question for God, be sure that it is something you need to know. Not just something you want to know. Asking for guidance from a deity can be answered in more ways that just hearing voices. If you are not Christian than look for sign that are associated with the particular god you call. (If you are Christian, look for signs from that faith it self, I don't know a lot of Christian theology so I can't help you with what to look for there.) For example if you ask Hecate for her help, look for a crossroads or dogs. If you ask Athena, look for strategy, owls, woven items. I read a poem once, I don't remember the exact words but I will share what I can remember here.

I asked the Goddess one day in the field
To show me her greatness
The sun shines and the grass grew
I didn't see
I asked the Goddess to let me hear her voice
The birds sang, and the children laughed
I paid no mind
I asked the Goddess to demonstrate her greatness with wonders to the world
a child was born, healthy and well
a man saved a stranger, who was in need
a car broke down, before the quake destroyed the bridge it would meet.
I didn't know.
I left the field, not knowing the Goddess had answered my prayers.
I returned to shadow, blind to all around me. I didn't see, I didn't listen, I didn't notice.
- Unknown

I'm sure you can tell that exactly how this poem went I don't know, but you get the point.

since Jesus came so that we can have a personal relationship with God, yes I have talked with God- before someone calls the person with the white jacket- I will explain what I mean. A relationship means with more than one person. God does respond to His children, when we quiet our hearts before Him, and admit that we are in need of salvation through His Son. I cannot say that I have actually heard an audible voice, but I can tell you many times God has lead me in His Spirit to say something to someone at a time when it was needed, or I have been encouraged by God's Spirit. How did I do it? Can only be done if you are in Christ- and if you take time to listen- God does not speak to those who chose to hurry through life and miss Him.

I know i'm opening myself up to ridicule, but you seem to be sincere in your question and I want to give you a sincere answer. I belive that God communicates with us all of the time, maybe not a "voice", but in that sudden sure knowledge, as in that "aha" or when you suddenly just know something and know that it's true. I also believe that the only people who truly "hear" God are the ones who have learned to sit still and really listen; the ones who have faith that He will "speak" to them. I'm not saying it was like a conversation where you sit down with someone and just talk back and forth, but it's more like this: I was hurting, broken, I had done all I knew to do and still nothing was right. I came to God in desperation, but knowing that only He could bring me out. I prayed and cried and prayed some more, I poured out everything I had in me and saw absolutely no change. Exhausted, I lay there, no thoughts running through my mind, no expectations, just open and waiting. Quietly, the answer came to my mind, almost as if it had always been there, but I knew that it hadn't. I felt the rightness of this thought even as I questioned it. That's one type of experience. They aren't all that dramatic, but this was how my first adult communication with God went. As a child, I was more open, my faith was much stronger and I trusted more easily, so He shot me ideas all of the time. Used to freak my mom out big time, but it was always right. So I don't know if this answers anything for you, but I hope it does.

I have done a lot of meditation. I sometimes am struggling to figure something out. If I meditate quietly for some time, and then return to the thought process, I tend to come up with new inspiration and fresh ideas. God speaks through inspiration. You don't have to talk to God, just tune into to him.

The condescension is stifling from some of the answerers...

anyway...

Yes I have. God talks to His children all the time..the question is if they have ears to hear what He is telling them. God answers me (thru the HS) all the time. Once when I was praying and a sense of sorrow overcame me so that I was just weeping and it felt like I was resting my head in the Lord's lap as I told Him what was wrong. He comforted me and told me to stop crying and instantly I felt better.

I was praying once about a situation I was angry about and I told God that He was going to have to fix it and though I hadn’t been able to for weeks, the next morning He took the anger out of my chest completely.

Once when I was in the shower and I was crying out to Him on behalf of some family members who were unsaved He told me why I felt so much agony for them....

There's no trick to hearing from God...its just being available to hear what He says, instead waiting for Him to tell you what you want to hear.

yea by confirmation though life...maybe i battled something from within and i asked Allah to guide me...i will give u an example...i was once accused of something that i didn't do...it could have destroyed me as a person and destroyed my life...i prayed harder then i ever prayed in my entire life for God to help me...i prayed so hard that i wrote a letter to Him no joke and i kept it for the longest...needless to say...the most important persons always had the wrong timing, or something happened to where they couldn't show up for EVERY post-poned court hearing...i had many that was always post-poned like over 7 court hearings because first it was the prosecutor...then every time after that it was the women who made the claim against me...i was not convicted. and the courts dropped the charges...that was Allah! and no one can tell me differnent

I thought so a while ago, it would happen during long prayer sessions, or during especially emotional times.

I realized later that it was just me, manufacturing a conversation, because I wanted sooooo badly for one to exist.

I was brought up believing that God had a purpose for my life, but couldn't ever quite figure out what it was. So that led me to strive incredibly hard to form a relationship with an entity that really didn't exist. I did this to support the belief that life didn't have meaning without God.

Edit: That was me Smarty Pants, I got one of those voice changers for my birthday.

If you are looking for technique, I can't help you. But if you pray in faith and humbly, knowing that God will only do what is right for you, you will hear His answer.
