sounds like anxiety issues to me.
First step - find a doctor who will listen to you. It's taken me a long time to work up the courage to talk to my doc, but I finally did and he's freaking awesome.
Don't ask for a specific pill - then they think you're fishing for something. Just tell your new doctor how you feel and ask what he suggests. Chances are he'll refer you to a psychologist so you can deal with your underlying issues, but he'll probably also give you meds. I take a super high dose of antidepressants and some benzos and I feel normal again. I could just hug him for finally getting me the help I've needed!

Yes I think it is self harm too. I do the same thing as well as cutting and am never aware that I am doing it and hten have very sore bleeding fingers and thumbs.
See if you can get your doctor to make a referral to the community mental health team to get you a psychologist or anyone to give a listening ear.
I have lots of sympathy, my son used to have panic attacks and think he was dying - his chest would lock solid like a brick.I would feel very helpless just watching him going through it.
Is there only one doctor in this surgery that you can see? Does the surgery have a counsellor attached?
I think Dr.s are not too bothered as compared to people who have life threatening illness your symptoms are small buns to them, however if you dont nip this in the bud it could become a way of life.
Look for some voluntary counselling or if you have some money pay to see someone who can help.

beta blockers are used to relax the heart muscle, to slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure and are taken daily. if you take them and don't need them it will make your blood pressure to low and make you ill. chewing the sides of your fingers is not self harm, but the cutting is. the doctor probably laughed because they're the one that's suppose to make the diagnosis. depression is like being in a hole of despair, you can feel there's no way out day after day. there are many symptoms, feeling tired all the time, having a really short temper, feelings of despair, over eating, no control over emotions and crying for an unknown reason. go back to your doctor and describe how you feel and go from there x

doctors have limited time when treating patients, in their surgery, psychological problems take up a lot of time to work through. so doctors tend to brush them off. unless they feel that the patient is in need of treatment. in which case they would be referred to a psychologist.
beta blockers are used to treat stress n anxiety.by reducing the activity of the nervous system and slowing the heartbeat. they would normally be used to treat people with heart disease, which you obviously don't have. it would be like using a steam roller to crack a nut. way over the top. that's probably why your request tickled his doctors sense of humour.he would have found the idea of it funny, but not laughing at your very real predicament.
you are self harming,in a mild way. it is a cry for help, to be taken seriously cos you want to feel OK.
you don't always know you are depressed. a good way to help reduce your stress n anxiety is to go for a half hour walk on your own where it would be safe for you to do so. pref the park or countryside.

Some medical doctors are idiots when faced with patients who have psychiatric issues (I once had a doctor tell me that the way to get over what was eventually diagnosed as acute chronic anxiety disorder and was related to a bad marriage and several pregnancy losses was to get pregnant again. We call those kind of docs a-- holes--and that's being kind. I should know. I'm a medical editor).
You are describing self-injurious behavior. You may have problems with anxiety, depression, anger control or other things that have either physical or psychological underlying causes. You need a referral to a mental health professional. If your doc won't give you one, get another doc or find a mental health doc or clinic yourself. YOu may or may not need medication.

It sounds like you have a problem when you get nervous or anxious, and though youre probably not suffering from a mental illness as such, it might help if you got some advice on dealing with anxiety or stress. Lots of hospitals do courses on this for a few weeks, to help you learn how to control your anxiety and the behaviours associated with it. Your doc should really be taking you seriously. I dont know how old you are but try taking a parent, older sister, or someone with you to docs for a bit of moral support. You will probably need a referral from the doc to see anyone about this.

Beta blockers are for heart conditions, not panic attacks. What you're doing is a form of self-harm, but it's not too bad as cutting is. An anxiety disorder is not necessarily the same as depression but depression can go with an anxiety disorder. If you're anxiety gets too bad, you should ask your gp for anti-anxiety medication that you can take in times of stress.

I would say this is self harm. I have borderline personality disorder, I have scars from cutting myself.
It was a relief when I got sent to the hospital the first time, I have been in the hospital twice.
It helped me understand why I was doing what I was.
I would fire your doctor if he's not taking you serious, and I would go see a psychiatrist. If you think you are going to hurt yourself in a bad way, you need to get to the emergency room right away.

You want to talk to your doctor about what symptoms you have and not suggest what he needs to prescribe for you.
Panic attacks are a result of stress. Stress is about how you think about things going on around you.
There are several things you can do before you take meds.
Meds are just temporary relief.
Start by watching much less TV or playing games.
Go out for a long walk instead.
Learn progressive relaxation exercises.
Learn meditation and daydream exercises.
Take 3 slow deep breaths. Breath in and breath out slowly.
When you are anxious, you tend to take shallow breaths and get less oxygen to your brain. This causes your brain to get dizzy and you start not thinking clearly.
Give it a shot! What can it hurt?
