After a lot of hard work and determination, a friend just got on with the volunteer fire department. I'd like to give him something special, any ideas?

A fire extinquisher? Maybe a nice plaque engraved with a firetruck and the date he joined the department and congratulations.

I would choose a simple congratulatory card. Add some personal touch to the card by writing some words of encouragement and how proud you are of his accomplishment and wishing him all the best in his new venture. In times like this, a material gift wouldn't mean much to the receiver.
